Buncrana Credit Union Cup Final

Clonmany Shamrocks                  4-0            Redcastle United

Played in beautiful conditions Clonmany retained the Buncrana Credit Union cup with this demolition of a well below par Redcastle side.The shamrocks started well and on 4 minutes Stephen McLaughlin’s corner found Philip Devlin at the back post but his header was well saved by Gerard Crossan.On 10 minutes good work by Michael Byrne saw him lay the ball off to Stephen McLaughlin whose snapshot was tipped over by Crossan.From Paul McLaughlin’s corner the ball seemed to go all the way to the net past a bemused Redcastle defence.Redcastle tried to reply with Paul Doherty’s ball over the top finding Joe Doherty but a good saving tackle by Joe Grant averted the danger.On 21 minutes a superb chest lay off by Stephen McLaughlin into the path of Steve Harkin saw him bear down on goal but Martin Farren saved the day with a brilliant tackle.Midway through the half Paul McLaughlin crossed to Byrne who returned the ball across goal to Stephen McLaughlin who blazed over.On 35 minutes Clonmany scored their second when poor defending allowed Stephen  McLaughlin to get possession and when his initial effort was blocked he scored at the second attempt from close range.Four minutes later the game was over as a contest when Paul McLaughlin fed Byrne whose first shot was well saved by Crossan but the rebound fell kindly for Byrne to slot home.The second half was a matter of playing out time but on 65 minutes Paul McLaughlin crossed  to Stephen McLaughlin who headed wide from close range.Redcastle replied with substitute Paul McGowan crossing to Jimmy Gallagher who went close with an overhead kick from the edge of the area.On 77 minutes a long clearance from Peter Devlin found Byrne who held off a challenge before firing high past Crossan from ten yards.While many may have  fancied Clonmany to win the cup few could have envisaged the way Redcastle capitulated and they must try and lift themselves for the league run in which sees another clash with Clonmany on the horizon.

The towering centre half never put a foot wrong all night and was the main reason that Redcastle failed to get a shot on target all night.He capped his performance with a brilliant interception to deny Redcastle even a consolation goal in the 88th minute.

McLaughlin goal enough to send Shamrocks to final

With wind advantage the shamrocks started well with Jason Devlin, twice and Raymond McDaid denied by good saves from Ralph Bredin.Moville replied and Nigel McMonagle had an effort  deflected away.The home side took the lead on the half hour after Jason Devlin crossed for Paul McLaughlin to head homer at the back post.A poor defensive header presented Jason Devlin with a good opening but he fired wide from six yards.Just after the restart the home side went close again when Michael Byrne fed Brendan Devlin but he fired just wide from the edge of the area.Moville replied with Peter Devlin cutting out a dangerous Declan McGuinness cross before Gavin Doherty twice went close with good efforts.On 78 minutes they spurned a great chance when the ball broke in the area to Graeme Doherty but he slipped  at the crucial moment and the chance was lost.Five minutes later McMonagle picked up a long ball and chipped it past Peter Devlin but it fell the wrong side of the post before Darryl McDermott fired just past the post in their final attempt.

The visitors opened well with both Joe Doherty and Paul McGowan going close with early half chances.Illies replied and Niall McDaid flashed a dangerous cross across goal but it eluded all.On the half hour the visitors went close when Joe Doherty had an effort well saved by Noel McDermott before at the other end Mark McLaughlin fired a napshot just over.Redcastle began the second half well putting Illies under pressure but the home side defended well.Martin Farren for the visitors went close when his shot through a crowd of players was well held by McDermott.The home side replied with both Alan Fletcher and McDaid not making the most of promising positions.The deadlock was broken on 83 minutes when following a corner the ball broke to Eddie McIntyre whose effort took a deflection past McDermott.

Buncrana Credit Union Cup Quarter Finals                       

Gleneely Colts    0            Moville Celtic          

The home side tried very hard throughout but failed to really trouble a good Moville side.The colts started well and Declan Kearney had a dangerous inswinging corner punched clear by Ralph Bredin.Colin Doherty replied for the visitors when he fired a shot across goal and wide before the same player fired well over the topThey went close again minutes before the break when Kris Duffy in the colts goal made a superb double save to deny Nigel McMonagle and then Colin Doherty from close range.Moville took the lead on 50 minutes after Graeme Doherty’s free was parried by Duffy allowing Colin Doherty to knock the ball home from six yards. The colts tried to reply with Iarlaith McLaughlin’s twenty yards effort well gathered by Bredin.In a quick break at the other end Alan Orr fed Ryan McMonagle and from a tight angle he looked to have scored but Barry Kearney got back to clear off the line.They doubled their lead on 65 minutes when a corner was not cleared by Duffy and in the scramble it was Mark Henry who forced the ball home from close range.Graeme Doherty fed McMonagle whose shot on the run flashed past the post.The home side went close when they  are  awarded a free twenty yards out but Declan Kearney’s effort was taken beneath the  bar by Bredin.The final effort came to the Moville side with  Henry’s vicious left footed effort superbly saved by Duffy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        R                                                                                                                                                                                                                               RasheneyFC 2Clonmany Shamrocks  4            (AET)

In the opening minutes a long ball from Philip Devlin found Brendan Devlin to poke past Kieran Friel but John Doherty got back to clear the ball.Devlin then shot over keeper Friel but Liam Diver completed an almost impossible clearance by hooking the ball away from underneath the bar.From the corner Raymond McDaid drove wide of the far post.Devlin then had a good effort blocked by Friel with Michael Byrne and Philpat Doherty failing to force the ball home.On 21 minutes Paul McLaughlin’s cross saw Devlin’s header saved by Friel.Clonmany took the lead when good work by Devlin fed McDaid who crossed for Jason Delin to fire low to the bottom corner from sixteen yards.Byrne glanced a header wide before seeing a shot saved by Friel  and Devlin tried an overhead kick which went narrowly wide.Rasheney replied on 33 minutes after Philip Ivers crossed from the right but the danger was cleared by Doherty.Jason Devlin had a long range effort held beneath the bar by Friel before on 43 minutes the home defence had to be alert to block efforts from McLaughlin and Devlin.The shamrocks went close on 48 minutes when Philip Devlin attempted chip clipped the crossbar. Brendan Devlin then fed Byrne but he was denied by the advancing Friel.Rasheney replied and good combination between Barney Doherty and Denis Hegarty saw the former denied by a last ditch tackle.Following a corner Anthony Doherty was unlucky to see his header clip the bar on the way over for the home side before John Doherty then had  a free kick delivered into the area but it eluded all inrushing forwards. The pressure paid off on 67 minutes when John McLaughlin’s well taken corner eluded all and ended in the net.On 76 minutes Brendan Devlin’s near post glancing header was well saved by Friel. On 80 minutes Clonmany regained the lead when good play between Devlin and Byrne saw Devlin slip the ball low past Friel from ten yards.The shamrocks should have sealed it when Friel parried a McLaughlin cross onto the bar but both Maurice Harkin and Stephen McLaughlin contrived to miss the target from point blank range.Rasheney replied and leveled again on 86 minutes when John McLaughlin’s corner was not dealt with and Brian Devlin forced the ball home.In the opening period of extra time Clonmany got back in front after McLaughlin’s corner was headed home by the unmarked Devlin.In the second period McDaid for the visitors hooked wide when well placed before Clonmany sealed victory in the last minute when McLaughlin drove a low shot to the net from fourteen yards after the home defence failed to clear.

Sea Rovers 0            Redcastle United 5  

Redcastle as expected coasted to an easy win at Malin Head and opened the scoring on 5 minutes after Eddie McIntyre crossed for Joe Doherty to slot low past Daniel Toland.They doubled their lead minutes later when Brendan McDermott headed home a corner at the near post. McDermott then tried his luck from long range on 30 minutes which Toland parried for Doherty to tap home before McIntyre fired a superb shot to the top corner to make it four nil. Before the interval the home side carved out a good chance when Gary Farren crossed for Andrew Davis to head over. On the hour substitute Andy Porter collected a lay off from McDermott to send a low shot to the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Redcastle dominated the remainder of the game without adding to their tally.

Culdaff FC            1            Gleneely Colts            1  ( AET Gleneely Win 4-3 Pens)

Played before a big crowd at Caratra Park this local derby went the full distance before the Colts emerged winners in the shootout. The home side for their part played poorly throughout and now they can concentrate on their fight for survival in the premier division. Gleneely started well and Gavin Mclaughlin had a header saved by Martin Mclaughlin in the home goal before Declan Kearney had a dangerous free kick cleared away at the back post by Brian McGonigle. Gradually Culdaff came into the game and when Derek Doherty laid the ball off to Dermot Diver his well struck effort was saved by Kris Duffy. John McFeely then saw his cross slice off Kearney and bounce on the bar and over before Brian Harris’s cross from the right found Derek Doherty whose header fell to Brendan Lafferty but he was crowded out by the colts defence. On 36 minutes Harris’s corner from the right was headed by Damien Harkin but cleared off the line .Gleneely then took the lead on 39 minutes when Kearney’s free was only half cleared to Ronan Kearney  who struck a superb left foot shot  from sixteen yards just inside McLaughlin’s right hand post. Culdaff’s response was immediate and when Paddy McColgan crossed Dermot Diver headed down for Lafferty to fire on the turn to the bottom corner from eight yards. Culdaff had a chance on the stroike of half time after a poor clearance fell to Conor O’Brien but he fired just over the bar from twenty two yards. The first chance of the second period fell to the colts on 54 minutes when Ronan Kearney’s snapshot went just wide. Culdaff rallied and when a corner broke to John McFeely his effort was parried by Duffy before the defence cleared the danger while on 76 minutes McColgan fed McFeely who burst into the area but fired over from fourteen yards. Gleneely nearly snatched it on 88 minutes when Declan Kearney’s superb corner just eluded James Gray at the back post when it only needed a touch. In extra time there were few chances. In the first period Lafferty fired just over while on the restart a Kearney cross was headed down by Gray to Ronan Kearnmey whose point blank effort was well saved by McLaughlin. And so it went to the shootout with Jarlaith McLaughlin firing home the last penalty to send the colts to a tie with the winners of Glengad and Moville in the next round

Aileach FC                  3            Moville Celtic                       6   (AET) 

The first half was an even affair with defences dominating and it was no surprise that it ended scoreless at the interval. What no one was prepared for was the avalanche of goals which followed. The visitors will rue the fact that they led three times and they opened the scoring on 55 minutes when Damien Barr found Anthony Doherty to slot low past John McGuinness from ten yards. Moville leveled immediately when Gavin Doherty’s effort deceived Paddy McDermott in the Aileach goal. The Moville defence misjudged  a high ball allowing Cathal McElhinney to head home and regain the lead for AIleach but on 84 minutes Nigel McMonagle crossed for Doherty to flick the ball home. Aileach regained the lead early in extra time when Graeme Brown’s cross was headed home by Anthony Doherty but again within minutes Moville leveled when in a scramble Gavin Doherty converted to complete a hat trick. Moville took the lead before the break when keeper McDermott failed to hold Doherty’s initial shot and he followed up to slot home. In the second period of extra time Moville went two clear when James Lafferty fired a brilliant shot to the roof of the net from twenty five yards. Colin Doherty complete the scoring when he tapped home McMonagle’ pinpoint cross.

 

Carrowmena FC       0            Clonmany Shamrocks                  2

Clonmany began well and on 5 minutes went close when Paul McLaughlin’s free was headed just wide by Brendan Devlin. Raymond McDaid then released McLaughlin but his effort was blocked by the legs of Michal Noone. Just past the half hour the home side replied when Darryl McDermott’s inswinging corner eluded all attackers .Clonmany ended a period of pressure forcing a series of corners which ended with Raymond McDaid’s insinging kick finding Brendan Devlin whose looping header sailed over the top of Michael Noone to the net. Ten minutes into second period they made it two nil after Darragh Doherty’s shot took a deflection on its way past Noone. Carrowmena came more into the game but struggled to make clear chances and Clonmany were comfortable winners.        

                    

Dunree United 0            Illies Celtic              7

The margin of victory was a huge surprise in this all premier division clash. Illies took the lead on ten minutes after a corner was headed back by Niall McDaid for Oliver O’Donnell to flick the ball home. They doubled their lead on 36 minutes when a poor back pass was seized on by Paul Doherty who shot low past Johnathan Noone. Dunree started the second period well but a defensive error when a through ball was misjudged by Noone and rolled all the way to the net saw them go three down. On the hour good work by Gavin Doherty saw his cross tapped in by Doherty before Mark McLaughlin ran onto a ball over the top to slot past Noone. Gavin Doherty raced clear of the home defence to shoot past Noone before McLaughlin completed the rout  capitalizing on a defensive error to slot home.                

 

Cockhill Celtic  3            Buncrana Hearts            0         

Cockhill got off to a dream start and took the lead on 5 minutes when Michael O’Connor’s free kick was flicked past Adrian Brown by Kieran Grant from ten yards. Seven minutes later they doubled their lead after an excellent move which began with Grant feeding Shaun Porter who released Kevin O’Donnell on the right and he crossed to Kevin McDaid who fired to the roof of the net from ten yards. O’Connor had another free parried by Brown and McDaid drove the loose ball wide when it looked easier to score.Buncrana found their feet and Puaric O’Flaherty broke clear but with Leo McColgan to beat fired high and wide before good work by O’Flaherty found Tommy Caldwell and from 6 yards he somehow contrived to hit the bar. Then in a goalmouth scramble before the break Darren McGlynn had an effort well held by McColgan. Cockhill were first to show on the restart when Jim Gillespie shot over while the Hearts saw O’Flaherty have another effort saved by McColgan. O’Donnell then flicked on for McDaid but he blazed over while on 63 minutes the home side sealed victory when Patrick McLaughlin dispatched a thirty yards free kick to the roof of the net. The last chance also fell to the home side after O’Donnell cut in and saw his well struck effort crash off the foot of the post.

 

Carn FC                      6            Greencastle FC            2

The premier division side blitzed Greencastle early on and took the lead on 7 minutes after Charles Fayed found Darren Loftus who lobbed Philip McClengahagh from ten yards.On 15 minutes good play from Robert McCartney took him past two defenders and when his effort was well parried by McClenaghan the loose ball was tucked away by Darren Burke.            They increased their lead on 22 minutes when Emmet O’Brien went on a fine run to set up Loftus and he fired to the top corner from ten yards. They sealed the tie on 41 minutes when Burke saw his initial effort parried by McClenaghan but the ball ran kindly for Burke to slot the rebound home. The visitors started the second period well and reduced the deficit when Kevin Cavanagh saw his effort parried by Ritchie Cunningham allowing Cathal Kelly to tap home. The home side hit back and when Loftus was upeneded he saw his effort well saved by McClenaghan. Greencastle then got another back on 57 minutes when Paddy Keys was upended allowing Kevin Cavanagh to convert the penalty. Carn restored their dominance when McCartney fired a superb thirty yards shot to the top corner before Burke completed his hat trick again firing to the top corner from twenty five yards.

 

QPS                 1            Rasheney FC                        1  (AET Rasheney win 5-4 Pens)

In the shock of the day  premier leaders QPS were dumped from the cup by first division Rasheney after a penalty shoot out. The point were first to show on 2 minutes when  Paul hegarty released Donny Bell but his effort was well saved by Damien Friel. Rasheny hit back and Sean Toland saw a twenty five yards free well held by Dan Carlin in the point goal.The point took the lead on 15 minutes after Barry McColgan’s floated free was headed on by Paul Grant for Bell to slot home from ten yards. Bell then beat the offside trap but saw his effort cleared off the line by a defender while at the other end an inswinging corner was headed clear by Seanan McColgnan. For the point Kevin Wallace then saw a ball over the top find Grant whose header was well saved by Friel. Rasheny had the first opportunity of the second period on 47 minutes when a defensive error allowed John Doherty a clear sight of goal but he was denied by a blocking save from Carlin. The point then had chances to seal the game but Wallace headed over before Mark Duffy and Paul Hegarty fired wide from good positions. Then on 63 minutes a defensive error allowed John Doherty to drill a low shot to the bottom corner from fourteen yards. On 85 minutes the point had another chance after Dean Barron cut in from the right but saw his shot well saved by Friel. In the first period of extra time Bell got on the end of a Duffy pass but saw his effort well saved while Alan Friel fired two chances for Rasheney into the side netting. The only chance of the second period saw Terry McColgan’s spectacular volley fly just wide and in the shootout it was Rasheney who advance scoring all five kicks.
