Buchanan strike fires the Point into next round

QPS            1-0    Illies Celtic

Played in Maginn Park on Saturday night the point started well with Raymond Buchanan’s corner finding Oisin McColgan but he headed over at the near post. Illies replied and when  Kevin O’Donnell beat a defender he saw his left footed shot well saved low to his right by David McGeady. O’Donnell had another opportunity but his effort was blocked by McColgan.Midway through the half  Illies had appeals for a penalty waved away.On 34 minutes a short corner by Buchanan to Brian McColgan was returned to Buchanan but his cross was headed over by McColgan. The point struck for the only goal on 41 minutes after Adam Harkin’s long ball from the right found Buchanan who controlled well sidestepped a defender and rolled the ball low past Noel McDermott from ten yards. Illies had a chance before the break when David Doherty crossed to the unmarked Aiden Doherty but his header was easily gathered by McGeady. On the resumption the  point had the first chance when Colm McLaughlin’s effort from twenty five yards deflected to Buchanan but his effort was also blocked. At the other end Paddy Doherty’s twenty five yards free was held at the second attempt by McGeady. The points substitute Adrian McColgan advanced up the left but saw his cross taken off Terry McColgan’s toes by defender David Doherty. McGeady had to be alert when Niall McDaid’s deflected effort was turned behind on 80 minutes. The point’s Colm McLaughlin beat the offside trap but was denied by the legs of McDermott who spread himself well. Illies pushed hard but were caught on the break when Anthony McColgan’s header was cleared off the line and Terry McColgan’s header came back off the bar.
