Umbro FAI Junior Cup Quarter Final

Redcastle’s adventure ends in spot kick woe.

Redcastle United       1-1       Carrick United ( Waterford) win 5-3 on pens

Redcastle’s fantastic run in the FAI Junior cup came to an agonizing end when they lost five three on penalties but they have done themselves and Inishowen football really proud with their adventure. On 5 minutes Jimmy Gallagher fed Andy Porter who deliovered a great cross but there were no takers.Carrick replied and Brian Barry’s free finding Liam Cleary but he headed wide when he should have done better.A poor backpass  a minute later saw Cleary pounce but as Crossan advanced to narrow the angle he fired wide. The home side replied with Doherty crossing to Porter who sliced his volley wide of the mark before at the other end Barry’s cross was sliced wide by Anthony Power. The visitors continued to press and Wayner Fitrzgerald then went close with a twenty five yards effort which whizzed wide. The home side then went close after Porter’s cross slipped through the keepers hands but a defender got back to clear and on 32 minutes Redcastle erupted when Paul Doherty fed Eddie McIntyre who advanced and fired a superb twenty yards effort to the bottom corner.Carrick replied before the break but Crossan saved superbly to deny John Cavanagh.Carrick started the second period well and Power’s corner was headed over by John Walsh.A mazy runby Porter for the home side ended when eh fired wide from twenty yards before on the hour Carrick leveled when Donal Cavanagh fired a twenty five yards free to the net.Redcastle had two late chances when on 74 minutes Brian Tracey had a free tipped over by keeper Walsh before on full time Tracey’s free found Farren at the back post but he just failed to convert.Extrra time failed to separate the teams and so it was the penalty shootout which saw Carrick score all five and Redcastle miss just one as the Waterford side advanced to the semi finals. All in all great disappointment for Redcastle but they can use this run to great effect in the closing weeks of the domestic season where they still have five trophies to play for.

Redcastle United   0   Ballyphehane Celtic   0     (Redcastle United win 2-1 on pens)

Played in a constant drizzle on a slippery surface Redcastle United         advanced to the last eight of the FAI Junior cup thanks to a nerve wracking penalty shoot out victory over a gallant Cork side. The visitors started the better and a slip by a home defender allowed Trevor Dunlea a half chance but he fired narrowly wide. Willie Ahearn then fired a twenty five yards free just over.Redcastle replied with Eamonn Reddin finding Charlie McCormick but he poked just wide before a dangerous Brian Tracey cross was headed away under pressure by JP Heffernan. On 27 minutes the visitors went close with Gary O’Shea’s curling effort just over the top. Before the break an O’Shea corner found the unmarked O’Mahoney but he headed wide. On the restart the home side stated well with Marty McNutt unleashing a piledriver which keeper Alan Crowley tipped onto the crossbar before McCormick turned well inside the area but was denied again by Crowley. On 78 minutes O’Mahoney drew a superb save from Gerard Crossan in the home goal as the game drifted into extra time. Chances were few and far between in the extra time period with Crossan again saving superbly from John Trolluck.Late on McCormick had a chance for the home side but he was crowded out. In the shootout the Cork side went first and missed their first three while Redcastle’s Brendan McDermott and Martin McNutt scored. Paul Doherty then had a chance to win it but his effort was saved but Crossan stood big and tall and saved the last kick to ensure they progressed.

Ballyphehane Celtic (Cork)            2            Moville Celtic                       0

As expected the home side made the better start and a ball forward by Danny Long found Alan O’Mahony but he fired wide. Minutes later good work by Gavin Doherty found Graeme Doherty who laid the ball off to Orr whose low drive was well saved by keeper Alan Crowley Crowley had to be alert shortly after when he held a snapshot by Graeme Doherty. The home side responded and when Long found Willie Ahearn his effort was well held by Ralph Bredin .Orr then had a shot saved by Crowley before on 42 minutes Moville suffered a hammer blow after Padraig O’Shea’s corner was nudged home by Long from close range.  Moville went two down on the hour and again it was another set piece when O’Mahony rose unchallenged to head to the roof of the net from twelve yards following a corner .Moville upped the tempo and were out of luck when Orr fed Mc Guinness and his low shot was saved at the foot of the post by Crowley. They went closer on 77 minutes when Ryan Mc Monagle’s solo run saw him cut in and fired in a shot which rebounded off the post .On 80 minutes a long ball by Kevin Coyle from defence found Mc Monagle whose attempted chip over the advancing Crowley rattled the bar .And so Moville’s run in the Junior cup comes to an end but they will benefit from the experience.
