Umbro FAI Junior Cup

Blistering start by the visitors ends Aileach hopes.

Aileach FC                  1-3       City United ( Sligo)

Played in Culdaff a dreadful start by the Inishowen side saw them trail three nil by the eighteenth minute and the tie as a contest virtually over. The Sligo side took the lead on 5 minutes when Keith Dempsey picked up a poor clearance advanced into the area and when his cross was flicked away by Kevin McDermott the ball fell to Paul Farren who steadied himself before rifling a shot from fifteen yards to the net. They increased their lead on 11 minutes when Farren’s powerful shot from the left was well parried by McDermott only for Dempsey to follow up and slot home from inside the six yards area.A quickly taken free kick by Lee Marshall had McDermott scrambling across his line and while he reached the ball he failed to hold onto it allowing Farren to turn the ball across for Dempsey to slot home from three yards. There was little in the remainder of the half with Aileach trying to get a foothold in the game but they never threatened David Scanlon’s goal and were always struggling to contain a lively City outfit.Aileach came more into the game after the break when Cathal McElhinney played a ball over the top to Thomas McMonagle but he was denied by a superb tackle by Paul Lynch. On 50 minutes Neil McElhinney advanced from the back but fired well over before on the hour McElhinney fed Paddy McCarron on the left and he flashed a dangerous ball across  the face of goal but there were no takers.City replied on 67 minutes with Gary Rooney slipping a pass into the path of Simon Gilmartin who fired across McDermott and just past the far post.Dempsey then jinked his way into the area but saw his effort crash back off the post before being cleared. On 72 minutes Aileach went close again after McCarron found substitute Ciaran Craig but his low shot was turned behind by Scanlon at his right hand post. They eventually got a goal back on 87 minutes when Dermot Doherty sidestepped a defender before driving a powerful shot past the despairing dive of Scanlon from twelve yards. They had another good chance when late on when substitute Stephen O’Donnell played a ball over the top to Cathal McElhinney but he headed the ball into the ground and the chance was lost.Aileach FC would like to express their thanks to Culdaff FC for the use of their pitch which was much appreciated.

Scoreline flatters the home side.

St Peters Athlone       4-0       Culdaff FC

The scoreline does not do Culdaff justice as they had big claims for a penalty not given and the home keeper handled outside the area but escaped penalty also.In addition the first goal of the game did not arrive until the 70th minute but two goals in five minutes meant there was then no way back for the Inishowen side. St peters began well with James Donaghue having a shot blocked before Gary Craughwell fired wide when well placed.Culdaff worked their way into the gameand midway through the half John McFeely sent Adrian McGonigle clear but his shot squirmed under the body of keeper Keith Heinze who recovered to stop the ball on the line.On the half hour Declan Kearney’s free was headed just wide by Brian McGonigle. The home side responded with Shaun O’Donnell saving well from Adrian Ward and O’Donoghue breaking clear but firing wide.Culdasff went close again when Matthew Byrne unleashed a piledriver from distance but it skimmed the outside of the post.Culdaff had their best spell in the twenty minute period after the break.McFeely fired narrowly over  before Byrne’s free was well gathered by Heinze. On the hour McGonigle burst into the area but was eventually denied by Heinze. The home side broke the deadlock on 70 minutes when Culdaff failed to clear a corner and Tom Silke poked the ball home through a crowd of players.Minutes later they added a second when from another corner the ball deflected off an unfortunate defender to the net.A defensive slip on 82 minutes allowed Brian Cantwell to fire home from fifteen yards. They completed the scoring on 88 minutes after Stephen Mullin ran through a demoralised visitors defence and fired past O’Donnell.

Superb result for Glengad  in Galway.

NUI (Galway) 2-2       Glengad United (Glengad win 7-6 on pens)

Glengad settled well and on 5 minutes John G McDermott ran at the home defence before firing just over the bar from the edge of the area.Ten minutes later they had another superb opening after a long free by Ruairi Doherty dropped behind the home defence but Terence Doherty headed the ball over from close range. On 18 minutes the home side responded when a corner was cleared to Derek Flaherty who turned a defender but saw his effort well saved by Michael McLaughlin.Glengad broke quickly from this and when Charlie Byrne released Terence Doherty his powerful effort crashed back off the crossbar. The home side had a goal disallowed for offside on 28 minutes before  Glengad took the lead on 38 minutes after John G Mclaughlin crossed for Patrick McDermott o volley to the top corner from the edge of the area for a superb goal.NUI came out on the restart and controlled the game for the opening quarter.Their pressure paid off 57 minutes when Tristan Rudden found space to drill a low shot from eighteen yards past the despairing dive of Michael Mclaughlin. The remainder of the ninety minutes was even and well fought and while both teams had chances they failed to trouble the respective goalkeepers. The home side took the lead on the stroke of half time in extra time after Michael Quinn crossed from the right for Flaherty who slotted home at the back post.Glengad upped the tempo and deservedly got back on terms midway through the second half when Patrick McDermott’s floated free found brother Paul at the back post and he fired home from close range. And so it was the dreaded penalty shootout with both teams scoring their first six.Glengad scored number seven before the Galway side fired high and wide to send Glangad into raptures and unchartered territory as this is the furthest they have ever gone in the competition. They will hope the draw is kind to them in the next round.

Glengad pounce for last minute winner

Bonagee United         1-2       Glengad United

Glengad “win” trip to Galway next week.

Glengad United          2-1       Kilmacrennan Celtic

Glengad kept their unbeaten run going with this excellent result against Donegal Premier division side Kilmacrennan.Their reward for this is a trip to Galway next weekend where they play NUI.In a lively opening both teams had half chances but failed to take advantage of them. The home side opened the scoring on 36 minutes after J G McDermott beat the offside trap and ran from halfway to shoot low past Jimmy McElwaine from the edge of the area.Kilmacrennan replied before the break forcing consecutive corners and from the second one the ball was cleared to Sean Sandilands who rattled the crossbar with a thirty yards effort. They should have equalised on 50 minutes when Aiden Friel’s chipped free found Timmy Burke but he lobbed the ball over the bar from only eight yards.Glengad replied and were unlucky after Patrick McDermott saw his free kick from the edge of the area rebound off the angle of post and crossbar. The visitors rallied and levelled on the hour mark when a corner was not cleared allowing John Doherty to turn and drive low and hard past Michael McLaughlin in the home goal rom fourteen yards.Seven minutes later the home side regained the advantage when Patrick McDermott converted a penalty awarded after he had been upended.Late on they had another gilt edged opening when Paul McDermott raced clear to round McIlwaine but see his effort cleared off the line.
