Honours even at the Warren      

Carrowmena FC         1-1       Greencastle FC

The visitors opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Sean Cavanagh’s free kick into the area sailed past a crowd of players to the net.Carrowmena replied with Michael O’Doherty finding Conor Radcliffe whose first time cross eluded all.The home side went close again on the half hour after O’Doherty found Paul Duffy who laid it back to Johnathan McLaughlin whose thirty yards effort crashed off the bar with Stephen Henry rooted to the spot.On the restart Carrowmena pushed forward but failed to create clear chances.Both teams were reduced to ten men on 75 minutes with Paddy Keys and Matthew Henry redcarded for an altercation.Carrowmena got back on terms on 80 minutes when Nadrew McLaughlin fed Henry who released Patrick McClenaghan who sidestepped a defender and fired low past Henry.The home side pushed for a winner with O’Doherty having an effort from distance well tipped over by Henry.

Rasheney scrape past Rovers at the Isle      

Rasheney FC             3-2       Sea Rovers    

The home side got an ideal start when they opened the scoring on 2 minutes after John McLaughlin beat a few defenders and fired low to the bottom corner past Seamus Houghton.It should have been two nil after 10 minutes when Denis Hegarty was upended but Sean Toland blazed over.Rovers replied with Luke Rodden beating two defenders and crossing  but there was no one there to force the ball home.They got back on terms when Seamus Doherty played a ball through the Rasheney defence allowing Gary Farren to run clear and fire a great shot from eighteen yards past Kieran Friel.Rasheney replied with SP Doherty having a header fingertipped over by Houghton who also fisted clear the corner.Midway through the half Andrew Davis fed  Seamus Doherty who beat the advancing Friel to the ball and fired an angled drive to the net.Rasheny responded with John Doherty having a shot off the post.Rovers finished the half strong when first Farren and then Doherty ran clear but on both occasions Barney Friel came to the home side’s rescue with superb tackles.Rasheny had the upper hand in the second period and levelled on 50 minutes when John Doherty fired home from eight yards in a congested area.Hegarty then outpaced the Rovers defence but Houghton blocked well.Midway through the half the home side were awarded a second penalty for blatant handball allowing John Doherty to convert. The home side spurned a number of chances and almost paid the penalty on 81 minutes Rovers went close when Donal Doherty’s free into the area fell to John McLaughlin but he fired over.In injury time Hegarty was denied by a smothering save from Houghton.                           

 

 

Lyons double inspires the home side.

Cockhill Youths          6-1       Gleneely Colts                      

The youths started this game really well with Aiden Porter and Martin Doherty both having efforts well saved by Rory Kelly.The youths opened the scoring on 8 minutes when Eamon Porter’s corner was slotted home from six yards by Aiden Porter. Gleneely tried to reply before the break but Christopher McLaughlin fired an effort well off target.Cockhill increased their advantage on 50 minutes after Jarlith Herrity fed Darragh Lyons who teed up James O’Donnell to slot home from twelve yards.On the hour they went further ahead when Shane McDaid’s cross was headed home by Lyons before Lyons added another from the penalty spot after he had been upended.Christopher McDermott headed home number five following an O’Donnell corner in the 80 minutes.The colts got one back on 85 minutes after Keith Mclaughlin’s free was headed home by TJ McKinley.But Cockhill had the last say when on the stroke of full time O’Donnell’s shot from thirty yards deceived Kelly on its way to the net.

Gleneely Colts                       3-1       Greencastle FC

In blustery conditions Greencastle started the better and on 18 minutes a corner fell to Paddy Keys whose powerful effort was tipped over by Martin Mooney.They spurned a great chance midway through the half after Michael Farren crossed to the back post where Jack Keys with the goal at his mercy sidefooted wide from close range. Gleneely replied and broke the deadlock on 37 minutes when a superb cross from Christopher McLaughlin fopund TJ McKinley and he lifted the ball over Kevin Cavanagh to the roof of the net from ten yards.Within a minute they had doubled their advantage when John McDaid fed McKinley and he drove low past Cavanagh from sixteen yards.Greencastle spurned a gilt edged chance on 48 minutes after Farren swung in a low free kick across the six yard line but Jack Keys failed to connect.    The game developed into a midfield battle until the 74th minute when a loose ball was picked up by McDaid and he rounded Cavanagh to slot home the colts third.Greencastle upped the tempo with Paddy Keys having an effort gathered at the second attempt by Mooney before the same player reduced the deficit with a superb shot to the top corner from twenty five yards.Keys again tested Mooney with a shot from the right hand side before Jack Keys had a header cleared off the line by Hugh Kelly in the closing minutes.           

United extend their lead at the top of the table

Glengad United          3-0       Rasheney FC

Playing against the wind the home side got off to a dream start on 5 minutes when Stephen Mclaughlin’s cross from the right deflected off a defender past Michael Toland.Rasheney press hard for the remainder of the half but were restricted to long range efforts which did not trouble Michael McLaughlin.Rasheney were unlucky on 33 minutes when Owen McGonagle’s free kick rebounded off the post before the home defence completed the clearance.Glengad started the second period very well and increased their lead on 52 minutes when Mclaughlin’s long clearance found Terence Doherty who fired first time past Toland from fifteen yards.They completed the scoring on 80 minutes when Charles Byrne dispossessed a defender and slotted low under the advancing Toland to seal the points and increase their lead at the top of the table.             

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

McDaid double inspires Illies past nine man home side

Carrowmena FC         1-7       Illies Celtic

Illies have served notice of their intention to be in the shake up after their early season blunders and have gone goal crazy although the home side were not helped by being reduced to nine men.The home side started well with Matthew Henry having an effort saved by Noel McDermott before after a good build up James Henry fed brother Matthew whose goalbound effort was deflected wide.On 13 minutes Illies opened the scoring when Paul Doherty fed brother Patrick and he squeezed the ball home from close range.On 20 minutes they made it two when Kieran McDaid pounced on a defensive error to round Michael Noone and slot home.McDaid repeaeted the trick minutes later when he was given too much room to waltz through the home defence round Noone and fire to the unguarded net.On the stroke of half time the home side got one back when Glen Callaghan’s corner was headed home by James Henry. Callaghan was then redcarded for dissent ten minutes after the restart  and when Adrew McLaughlin handled on the line on the hour they were down to nine with Martin Donaghey converting the spotkick. Carrowmena tried hard but were caught on the break late on with goals from Paul Doherty, Seamus Donaghey and Alan Fletcher completing the tally.      

McDermott spot on as Glengad consolidate their league position

Glengad United          6-0       Sea Rovers    

Rovers best chance of the game came in the 15th minute when Gary Farren dispossessed a defender and fired in a superb shot which Michael McLaughlin tipped over the bar.Minutes later the home side replied after Stephen McLaughlin had an effort well parried by Seamus Houghton  only to see Terence Doherty fire the rebound wide.The home side opened the scoring on 41 minutes when Patrick McDermott converted a penalty awarded for handball.They doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Michael Doherty’s deep cross was converted at the back post by Stephen McLaughlin.Five minutes into the second period Terence Doherty fired a twenty five yards effort low past Houghton before the same player crossed for John G McDermott to slam the ball home from close range.Patrick McDermott then converted his second penalty awarded after brother Paul was fouled on 65 minutes. They completed the scoring on 78 minutes when John G McDermott crossed for Michael Doherty to fire first time past Houghton from ten yards.

Cockhill fortunate to claim three points       

Rasheney FC             1-2       Cockhill Youth

Rasheney with the wind dominated the opening half and on 6 minutes John McLaughlin and Corny McCole combined well on the left for McCole to cross but there werer no takers as the ball flew across the six yard line.They opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Denis Hegarty cross shot found Sean Paul Doherty to fire high past Leo McColgan.Midway through the period a long range Sean Toland effort was gathered by McColgan before Shane Collins had a  low  effort which lacked power to beat McColgan.On 35 minutes McColgan spilled a corner but Aiden Porter headed off the line and from the corner the ball bounced around the area before being cleared in a real let off for Cockhill.On 40 minutes Shane McDaid for Cockhill turned well but his effort was blocked by a combination of defenders.Cockhill came more into the game on the restart and on 55 minutes Jarlith Herrity got on the end of a cross but his header was blocked by keeper Michael Toland.The visitors got back on terms on 62 minutes when a corner was cleared to Michael McLaughlin who fired a rising shot to the roof of the net. Paul Mc Kinney then had an effort off target.On 81 minutes the home siode’s McLaughlin found substitute Michael Toland whose header was saved by McColgan.Toland again brought a good save from McColgan when he cut in from the right and curled a left footed shot which the keeper gathered.On 86 minutes the visitors struck after Aiden Porter’s shot deflected off a defender to the other corner of the net.
