Harkin fires Rasheney to cup glory

Played in beautiful conditions in St Egneys Park Rasheney got their hands on silverware for the first since they lifted the same cup in the 1996 / 97 season.They began well and on 3 minutes a corner from the right caused confusion in the Clonmany defence and Liam Diver’s looping header bounced off the bar.Minutes later John McLaughlin headed infield to Ryan Harkin but the striker blazed over when off balance.Clonmany had their best chance of the game on 11 minutes after Andrew Doherty’s free found the unmarked SP Doherty and he headed across goal and inches past the far post from eight yards.Rasheney continued to press and broke the deadlock on 36 minutes when a brilliant burst down the right by Eamon Mahon took him into the area and he flicked the ball across to Harkin who turned it home past Patrick Harkin from seven yards.On the stroke of half time Clonmany went close when SP Doherty volleyed just wide from the edge of the area. On the restart Clonmany had another effort when Shaun Doherty fired over from twenty yards.Rasheney almost doubled their lead on 63 minutes when Alan Friel made ground on the right and fed Ryan Harkin who found space but his driven effort was superbly saved by Harkin low to his left.Minutes later Mahon fed John McLaughlin on the left but again Harkin saved at the expense of a corner before on 72 minutes McLaughlin fed substitute Barney Doherty on the right but Harkin advanced to block well.Clonmany threw men forward in the last ten minutes with substitute Kevin Harkin pulling the ball back to Edmund Doherty but he hesitated and his shot lacked power.On 83 minutes at the other end Ivan Doherty’s headed backpass went past Harkin but Doherty recovered well to clear. On 88 minutes Clonmany’s Michael Harkin fired in a shot on the run which Friel gathered at the second attempt. All in all an entertaining final with Rasheney just the stronger of the teams on the night.

Clonmany broke the deadlock on 21 minutes when Andrew Doherty’s free found SP Doherty and he sidefooted past Sean Friel from close range.Rasheney replied with Donal Kelly’s cross shot coming off the angle of post and bar before Sean Grant raced clear, with the home side calling for offside, but under pressure he fired wide.On the restart Malachy Gill had a free well saved by Patrick Harkin in the home goal.Clonmany upped the tempo and increased their lead when substitute Kevin McCarron’s corner was powerfully headed home by Rocky Ivers.Michael Harkin then fed McCarron who fired low past Friel before another Doherty free was headed on by Ivers to another substitute Aiden Doherty and he made no mistake from close range.On 78 minutes they made it five when McCarron found space to turn in the box and shoot low to the corner.Rasheney tried to reply with Peter Hegarty seeing his effort well blocked by Declan Grant before Grant turned provider when he crossed for Dessie Doherty to control well and shoot past Friel from six yards.

The home side got off to a great start and opened the scoring on 21 minutes when a corner was cleared to Sean Baldrick whose shot was parried by Philip McClenaghan to Thomas Mulhern who fired to the roof of the net.The visitors got back on terms on the half hour after Liam Kelly crossed for JP O’Doherty whose first time shot from twenty yards flew to the top corner.On the hour Greencastle took the lead when Ian Kavanagh fed Paddy Keys and from a narrow angle he fired home.They increased their advantage when Christy McLaughlin collected a thrown in and fired home from a very acute angle.The visitors sealed the points on 85 minutes when Cavanagh fed keys and his shot was deflected past substitute Johnny Toland.
Moville Res 1 Glengad United 1 (Moville Res won 4-2 on pens)
In probably the shock of the round Moville Reserves defeated first division Glengad on penalties to progress to the next round of the cup.Glengad with the wind exerted a lot of pressure but the only chance of note came midway through the half when Christy McLaughlin’s free kick from thirty yards was well tipped over by Shaun McGuinness. The home side got off to a dream start on the resumption when John L Coyle fed Christy McGeoghaghan who chipped Michael McLaughlin from all of thirty yards.Glengad upped the tempo and forced a number of corners and the pressure paid off on 75 minutes when Paul McDermott converted a penalty after he had been upended.Both period of extra time were tight affairs with few chances created by either side and defences well on top.As a result it went to penalties and Moville advance as Glengad fired two kicks wide.

A last minute goal by the visitors denied the home side the prospect of extra time which they at least deserved from this clash.They started well with Conor Keddy’s cross knocked wide from six yards by Seamus McLaughlin.Buncrana replied on 15 minutes when Simon McGrory fed Patrick Fletcher but he fired just past the far post.The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes after the home defence failed to clear a corner allowing Tommy Caldwell to stroke home from twelve yards.Culdaff should have leveled before the interval when Niall Gordon fed Gary Collins who rounded keeper Mark McGonigle but saw his effort cleared off the line by Gerard Kelly.The home side started the second period well and deservedly got back on terms after Gordon was upended and Raymond McFeely converted the spot kick.They almost took the lead midway through the half after a mazy dribble by Keddy saw his effort well saved by McGonigle.Buncrana responded well with both Fletcher and Michael Furey denied by George Houten in the home goal.On 79 minutes Collins snapshot from the edge of the area was tipped over by McGonigle.With extra time looming the home defence failed to clear allowing Caldwell to again poke the ball past Houten from eigtht yards.

The home side done the damage when they scored twice in the opening seven minutes.On 5 minutes James Gillen’s free found Paul Duffy whose squared for Michael O’Doherty to slide the ball past Patsy Barr.Minutes later Gerard Gill’s corner was flicked on by O’Doherty for PJ Barr to volley to the roof of the net from ten yards.The visitors settled with Philip McClenaghan and Sean McDermott prominent and went close on 36 minutes when Finn McCormick's free was tipped over by Michael Noone.The home side went close again before the interval when Ritchie McElhinney turned a defender twice but was denied by a smothering save from Barr.Greencastle went close on 56 minutes after Martin Cooley’s inswinging effort was cleared off the line by Andrew McLaughlin. Carrowmena sealed it on 66 minutes when Brian Orr fed McElhinney and his deep cross was tapped in at the back post by Johnathan McLaughlin.Mclaughlin then went close late on but saw his header cleared off the line.
Gleneely Colts 2 Sea Rovers 0
The colts dominated the opening half with Declan Kearney and Neil G Duffy pulling the strings in midfield but they spurned chance after chance.Iarlaith McLaughlin fired over before Ronan Kearney somehow shot wide from five yards on 21 minutes.Jason McElhinney then turned provider when he had successive crosses headed over by Ronan Kearney and one blazed over by McLaughlin.They did make the breakthrough on 35 minutes when Duffy and Declan Kearney combined to feed Ronan Kearney who cut inside the fullback to neatly slot the ball past Daniel Toland.Rovers came much more into the game on the restart with Andrew Davison feeding Gary Doherty but his effort was brilliantly saved by Kris Duffy.Davison then fed substituite Simon Ward who beat a couple of defenders but fired just wide.Ward then controlled but fired over before Gary Farren crossed for Gary Doherty who controlled well but mishit his shot when well placed.The colts sealed the tie on 71 minutes when McElhinney,Ronan Kearney combined to feed James Gray and with his back to goal he executed a brilliant overhead kick to the top corner from fifteen yards.Martin Mooney then had an effort punched clear and he fired the rebound over.
Farren inspires Carn to next round
Carn Res 4-1 Glengad Res
Although scoreless in the opening period both sides had reasonable chances. For the home side the evergreen Paul Farren had a free kick tipped over the top by Ruairi Kelly while the visitors responded before the break when Gerard McClay broke on the right and crossed for Brian Doherty but he shot wide.Carn broke the deadlock on 50 minutes when Dermot Doherty fed Farren and he lobbed Kelly from ten yards.They doubled their lead midway through the period after Farren’s cross from the right was slotted home by Dermot Doherty.Glengad replied and got one back after a scramble in the area fell to Paul McGonagle and he slotted home from close range.Carn regained their two goal lead when James McDaid broke on the right and squared to John Doherty to slide the ball home.They completed the scoring late on when Doherty’s powerful shot was parried by Kelly allowing substitute Shaun O’Donnell to tap in.
Doherty & Friel fire Rasheney to next round
Rasheney FC 2-0 Redcastle Res
This game was switched to Rasheney and they took full advantage as they opened the scoring on 3 minutes when a long clearance by keeper Kieran Friel found John Doherty and he fired low past Liam Davenport from ten yards.Davenport was then in top form to deny both Alan Friel and John McLaughlin in succession.Redcastle’s best chance of the half came on 41 minutes when Brendan Murphy’s snapshot was well saved by Friel. Rasheney dominated the second period and increased their lead on 64 minutes when Doherty ‘s free from the left found Friel and her headed home at the back post.They went close again when John McLaughlin went past three defenders and the keeper but from an acute angle fired wide.Redcastle went close late on after Colm McLaughlin beat keeper Friel to the ball but it drifted the wrong side of the post.

Doherty strikes for winner
Clonmany Res 1-0 Carrowmena FC
Clonmany Res once again demonstrated the high standard in the division when they defeated Carrowmena of the first division in a closely well contested game.The visitors had the first opportunity when Darryl McDermott cut in from the left and fired in a low shot which clipped the outside of the post.Clonmany replied with Kevin McCarron’s corner finding Aiden Doherty whose header was well saved by Maurice McGeady. Carrowmena upped the tempo and Michael O’Doherty had an effort blocked by the legs of Paddy Harkin before minutes before half time a long ball was flicked on to McDermott but he snatched at the chance and it was lost.The home side broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when McCarron’s free to the back post was headed across by Michael Harkin to Aiden Doherty who headed to the top corner from seven yards.Defences were on top until the visitors upped the pace in the last quarter.On 81 minutes PJ Barr flashed a low effort from the edge of the area inches past the post.Then with minutes remaining John McGeady saw an effort well parried by Harkin in the home goal and although Barr slotted the loose ball home he was deemed to be offside.The visitors were reduced to ten men after Barr was redcarded for dissent and Clonmany advance to the semi final.
Evergreen Farren inspires Carn to semi final

In another semi upset the experienced home side had too much for the youthful visitors.They got off to a greta start after Paul Farren split the home defence allowing Dermot Doherty to run clear and slot low past Mark McGonigle in the visitors goal.Minutes later the roles were reversed when Doherty broke on the right and cut the ball back to Farren to clot home from six yards.Buncrana replied and were unlucky when Patrick Fletcher’s corner found Bernie Doherty whose header was cleared off the line by John Doherty.They got a goal back on the stroke of half time after when the home defence missed a long clearance allowing Fletcher to nip in and slot past JJ Doherty.Carn regained their cushion on 55 minutes when Farrens header saw John Doherty glance a header past McGonigle from seven yards before Philip Doherty’s free kick deceived all and landed in the net.Shane Doherty then cut in past a defender and unleashed a shot which McGonigle tipped round the post.The visitors got a consolation on 89 minutes after Bernie Doherty’s cross from the right found Fletcher who converted at the back post.

Rasheney got off to a dream start when on 3 minutes Vincent Brennan’s free kick eluded all defenders and attackers allowing Anthony Doherty to slot to the unguarded net.On 14 minutes another Brennan deliver was glanced goalwards by Liam Diver but well claimed by Kris Duffy.Gleneely replied with Iarlaith McLaughlin having a shot deflected before Declan Kearney fed James Gray who controlled before shooting straight at Kieran Friel.Kearney then played a diagonal ball to Keith McLaughlin on the right but his crossshot was saved by Friel.On the half hour the colts keeper Duffy slipped taking a free on the edge of the area and Barney Doherty’s first time return went just wide.Gleneely replied and good work by Ronan Kearney and McLaughlin ended with a weak shot from McLaughlin.Rasheney doubled their lead on 36 minutes when John McLaughlin’s corner found Brennan whose header was touched home by Denis Hegarty.Gleneely were on top for long periods of the second half and reduced the deficit on 48 minutes when Ronan Kearney advanced to the edge of the area and drilled a low shot to the bottom corner.They continued to press with Declan Kearney’s free finding Barry Diver but he failed to hit the target and they were creating havoc for the home side with Ronan Kearney,Gray and McLaughlin all prominent in attack.Against the run of play Rasheney hit on the break with Alan Friel finding John McLaughlin amd his first time effort from the corner of the area flew into the roof of the net.Gleneely kept pressing with Mclaughlin and Declan Kearney having efforts beaten away by Friel before Ronan Kearney and Neil G Duffy went close with late efforts.
Keys Hat trick sparks incredible comeback
Greencastle FC 3-3 Moville Res Greencastle win 4-3 on pens
Moville will wonder how they led this game three nil at the interval but lost in a penaltly shoot out.The home side started the better with Paddy Keys having an effort well saved by Sean McGuinness and Shaun McKinney’s follow up cleared off the line by Tony McGeady.Moville took the lead on 16 minutes when a defensive error allowed Kevin McDermott to head home at the back post.They doubled their lead midway through the half after James Lafferty released Rory Lafferty and he rounded Philip McClenaghan to slot home.The visitors went three nil up before the interval when Christy McGeoghaghan fired a twenty yards effort low to the corner.Greencastle tried to respond and on the stroke of half time Gerard Kelly had an effort well saved by McGuinness.They got one back minutes into the second period when after Paddy Keys fired a twenty five yards free to the top corner. Minutes later the same player fired a stunning free from thirty yards in off the underside of the bar.They continued to press with McKinney,Kelly and Keys having efforts well dealt with by McGuinness.With two minutes remaining they got back on terms when Ian Cavanagh’s shot rebounded off a defender to Keys who slotted the ball home.Both teams attacked in extra time but the defences stood firm and it was Greencastle who advance to the semi finals.

The home side started well with Kevin McCarron crossing on 5 minutes to Aiden Doherty who controlled well turned and fired to the roof of the net from eight yards.Doherty then latched onto a through ball from Michael Harkin but miscontrolled and the chance was lost.Greencastle hit back with Paddy Keys corner headed over by Shaun McKinney before Keys went close with a free kick just over the top.They had another chance after Cathal Kelly found space but drove staright at Patrick Harkin from fourteen yards.Clonmany had penalty claims waved aside before at the other end John Gillen had a free kick rebound off the wall.On 40 minutes Keys had another good chance when he latched onto a poor clearance but drove into the side netting.On the stroke of half time Clonmany added a second when Andrew Doherty’s free found Karl Harkin and he slid the ball low past Philip McClenaghan.Greencastle started the second period well with substitute Jack Keys shooting well wide from a good position before they reduced the deficit on 54 minutes when Paddy Keys converted a penalty after McKinney was upended.On the hour a scramble in the Greencastle box saw McClenaghan and Jp O’Doherty both cleare efforts off the line.At the other end Paddy Keys ran clear onto a through ball but when his initial effort was saved by Harkin he fired the rebound over the top.Clonmany sealed the win with a contender for goal of the season after Michael Harkin fired a thirty five yards effort to the top corner.
Carn Res 2-2 Rasheney FC ( Win 5-4 on pens)
In a very entertaining game it swung one way then the other before finally being decided in a sudden death penalty shootout.Carn started well and on 2 minutes Brendan Tabb’s volley at the back post was touched onto the post by Kieran Friel.Midway through the half the home side created another good opening when good footwork by John Doherty took him into the area but his effort was straight at Friel.Rasheney replied minutes later when Brian Devlin overlapped onto a quick free on the right and crossed to John McLaughlin whose driven left footed effort skimmed the outside of the post.Carn upped the pace with Paul Farren feeding Barry McElhinney but he fired weakly at Friel before Farren then had an effort turned behind by Friel.Rasheney broke with Paul McConnellogue crossing to Alan Friel who chested the ball into the path of Ryan Harkin but his close range effort drew a superb save from JJ Doherty.Carn opened the scoring on 37 minutes when Philip Doherty played a great ball over the top to Farren who controlled and composed himself before firing low past Friel from ten yards for a superb finish. Rasheney came out with all guns blazing on the restart with Barney Doherty cutting along the byline rounding keeper Doherty but from a tight angle hitting the side netting.Alan Friel then ran onto a ball over the top but his attempted lob was brillianty tipped away by Doherty before Doherty was alert again to tip Vincent Brennan’s long range free over the top.Carn were restricted to hitting on the break and on 67 minutes great work by McElhinney on the left saw him fire into the side netting.On 80 minutes another ball into the Carn area broke to John McLaughlin but he was denied again by Doherty.Doherty then failed to hold a ball allowing Alan Friel to poke goalwards but Shane Donaghey cleared off the line.Carn replied on 85 minutes when Paul Farren’s shot rebounded to Ryan Davenport but his follow up was headed clear by Liam Diver.On the stroke of full time a sweeping move from Rasheney saw John McLaughlin’s cross fall to Anthony Doherty but his close range effort was beaten away by Doherty. McLaughlin’s ensuing corner was bundled home by Alan Friel to force extra time.In the opening minute Philip Doherty’s free from the right was headed across goal by Enda Sweeney forcing Brennan’s headed clearance to come off the bar and away to safety.Rasheney took the lead when Brennan played a superb long ball over the fullback to substitute Simon Friel and he cushioned the ball round the advancing Doherty.They almost added another on the stroke of half time but McLaughlin’s free from twenty yards skimmed the crossbar.The only goalmouth action of note in the second period was the Carn equalizer and what a goal it was.Substitute Brian Lafferty picked up the ball wide on the left and hammered a brilliant shot over keeper Friel to the top corner.In the shootout both teams had their opening kicks saved before scoring the next four. But when Eamon Mahon converted keeper Friel became the hero when he saved the final Carn kick to send Rasheney to their first cup final in many a long year and what a final that promises to be against local rivals Clonmany Reserves.
