Shocks galore in Cup

Solitary O’Brien strike enough for Gleneely

In the opening minutes the home side’s Shaun Doherty saw.good effort well saved by Mulhern in the visitors goal before a defensive slip allowed the visitors Corey O’Brien a clear sight of goal but he failed to hit the target.Greencastle replied with Shaun Cavanagh heading an Ian Cavanagh cross over the bar. Greencastle  had the final chance of the half when Matthew Harrison’s low effort was again well saved by Mulhern. On the resumption Gleneely took the lead on 56 minutes when Ciaran McDonald failed to collect a through ball and O’Brien pounced to drill the loose ball home.Greencastle pushed forward but they failed to break down a well organized Gleneely defence with Kevin Doherty and Danny McLaughlin in commanding form. There were few chances in the remaining part of the game with Gleneely content to absorb the home side s pressure and try and hit them on the break.

McGuinness the hero in shootout

Moville Res                   3-3    Dunree United ( Moville win 4-3 on pens)

In a very hard fought game this was full of action and took penalties to decide this cup contest. Played in perfect conditions Dunree opened the scoring on 12 minutes when Liam Baldrick fed Damien Doherty and he sidestepped a defender and slid the ball low past the advancing Sean McGuinness. Moville replied with Brendan Doherty spreading the ball to Eunan McDaid whose cross was swept just wide by Conor Lafferty. They got back on terms when Doherty played the ball to Lafferty between the defenders and slide the ball past Johnathan Noone from sixteen yards.On the half hour Moville took the lead after Kevin McDermott played a long ball forward for Lafferty to nip in between keeper and defender and fire the ball home. Dunree started the second period well with Damien Doherty and Brendan McDaid spurning half chances. They leveled on 53 minutes after substitute Ryan Bradley pounced on a loose ball to drive the ball low to the corner from the edge of the area.There was little in the way of clear chances but Dunree forced a number of corners which McGuinness dealt well. Dunree took the lead when Kevin Murphy got onto a through ball and fire past McGuinness from fourteen yards. The home side rallied and got back on terms on 82 minutes when McDaid’s cross was half cleared by Noone but McDermott reacted quickest to slam the ball home. In extra time both keepers made good saves with Noone denying McDermott to knock the ball around the post. At the other end Philip McGuinness crossed for Derek Murphy but keeper McGuinness brilliantly turned the ball round the post. In the penalty shootout McDermott sealed the win when he fired the spot kick home with McGuinness saving two kicks as well.

Barr ‘s men ease past Cockhill

Kevin Barr’s side progressed to the next round with this victory over premier rivals Cockhill played in beautiful conditions. Cockhill started well but failed to trouble the home goal in the opening quarter. On 17 minutes Aileach broke and took the lead with Graham Brown advancing on the right and crossing for Gerard Arbuckle to slot home past Liam Lynch at the back post. Midway through the half the visitors Brian King saw a twenty five yards effort tipped over the bar by Jamie McGowan. On 42 minutes Conor Gallagher then saw his well hit effort tipped over the bar by Lynch at full stretch. Cockhill replied on the stroke of half time when Gary Breslin fired inches wide from the edge of the area. In the second period Cockhill began well with Chris Hegarty saw his effort kicked off the line by Mark McLaughlin on 51 minutes. The home side responded with Liam Burke firing straight at Lunch from twelve yards. Aileach increased their lead on 72 minutes when susbstitute Shane Kerrigan cut in from the right and fired a superb low shot to the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Cockhill pushed forward and were almost caught out but Lynch saved superbly from Burke as the home side advanced.    

Doherty double earns local rights

Clonmany Res     2-1    Rasheney FC ( AET)

Played in good conditions this local derby proved to be a very tight affair with the opening chance fell to Desie Doherty who ran onto Aiden Doherty’s pass and from an acute angle fired just past the far post.Rasheney came more into the game with Alan Friel unlucky not to get his head to John Doherty’s cross from the left before the same player ran onto a through ball but he blasted over from ten yards as Paul McGettigan advanced.Rasheney dominated the second period with Clonmany depending on counter attacks and few chances created.Rasheney had the best two chances when Damien Friel hooked over from twelve yards on 64 minutes and Brian Doherty slipping as he shot ten minutes later allowing McGettigan to gather.In extra time Clonmany took the lead when Aiden Doherty fired high to the roof of the net from eight yards after Daniel McLaughlin crossed. Rasheney equalized immediately when Emyln Doherty fired a superb shot to the top corner from twenty yards. At the end of the first period Clonmany restored their lead when Aiden Doherty turned well in the area and fired low past Colin Doherty in the Rasheney goal. Clonmany defended desperately for the second period and hung on to advance to the next round.

Point come from behind for hard earned win       

Dunree Res                   1-3    QPS Res

In a hard fought game the visitors settled the better with Shaun Harkin and Dean Hegarty prominent.Good defending by David Rudden and Martin Lynch kept them at bay in the early stages.Against the run of play Dunree opened the scoring when Frank Kelly’s free was headed down by Malcolm McGee to Launch who fired low past keeper Brian Lynch from close range on 28 minutes. The point ended the first half strongly but remained behind at the break. They spurned a great chance to get back on terms when Harkin was upended on 55 minutes but Paul Grant’s poor kick was well saved by Roger McGilloway. When Harkin was again upended in the area minutes later this time Paul Hegarty hammered the ball low past McGilloway to equalize. The point took the lead when Cathal McColgan slotted the ball low to the net from close range after Grant’s corner fell to him six yards out.The visitors added a third minutes before the end when Dean Hegarty fired a superb low effort past McGilloway from twenty yards.

Coyle’s side win local derby       

Glengad Res                 0-1    Carn FC

This was a hard fought affair with the visitors starting well when Liam Doherty fired straight at Martin Kelly in the home goal. The home side responded with Liam Nelson feeding Daniel McDaid but he fired wide from a good position.Midway through the half Carn’s Darren Loftus played a long ball to Doherty but he headed over from the penalty spot. Glengad had a good chance on the half hour but McDaid fired straight at Declan O’Donnell from ten yards. Carn broke the deadlock on 44 minutes when Loftus advanced on the right and crossed for Doherty to drill a low shot to the bottom corner from the edge of the area.In the second period the home side started well with Paul McDermott ‘s free finding the unmarked Nelson but he headed wide from six yards.Carn were dangerous on the break with Doherty releasing Loftus but he fired wide when in a one on one situation. The home side’s best chance arrived on 72 minutes when McDermott squared to McDaid whose poked effort was blocked by the legs of O’Donnell. The home side pushed hard  but the visitors defence     with Gerard McEleney and Brendan Tabb prominent stood firm.        

Greencastle pay the price for missed chances

Greencastle FC   1-2    Illies Res ( AET)

In another shock result Illies Reserves came from behind to defeat Greencastle but the home side have only themselves to blame as they spurned numerous chances to put the game beyond reach.          They dominated most of the game and took the lead on 19 minutes after good interplay between Michael Barr and Liam Kelly released Paddy Keys who crossed for Ryan McClenaghan to head home at the back post.McClenaghan then headed over a Liam Kelly cross before Barr, Keys and McClenaghan all spurned good chances. Illies made them pay minutes before the interval when a long free from Dominic Doherty caught the home defence out allowing Gerard McDaid to head past Patsy Barr from close range. Greencastle upped the tempo on the restart with Sean McQuillan having a fierce drive turned away by Graeme Doherty who then excelled to tip Keys effort away.Keys then fed McClenaghan but with the goal at his mercy he fired wide before Barr’s cross found Jack Keys and he volleyed over the top from fifteen yards. In extra time the home side continued to create and spurn chances.McClenaghan, Keys and Gavin Doherty all had effort which Doherty in the visitors goal was equal to.Paddy Keys then released Stephen Bonner but his effort was hacked off the line by Dominic Doherty. Illies made them pay with minutes of the second period remaining when a long ball sent Glen Callaghan away and his perfect pass was swept home by paddy McCarron. Greencastle still had one final chance to force a shootout but in a scramble Bonner somehow headed wide from point blank range.    

Holders depart in quarter finals

Cockhill Celtic Yths      2-0    Carrowmena FC

Cockhill caused a big upset when they dumped the defending champions from the competition and the opening phases were a tight midfield battle. On 21 Minutes Seamus Gill had the first effort but failed to trouble Michael Noone in the visitors goal before the same player fired wide again. James O’Donnell then had a free kick rebound off the wall but Martin Donagheys rebound was straight at Noone. On the restart Carrowmena had a great chance but Brian Kone’s effort was well tipped over by Leo McColgan in the home goal. Cockhill broke the deadlock on the hour after O’Donnell’s free from the right was headed to the roof of the net by Gill from eight yards. They added to their lead ten minutes later after good work by Kieran McLaughlin and Martin Bradley who released Aiden Porter to drive low and hard to the bottom right hand corner. Carrowmena pressed hard with shots from Brian Kone,David Heuston and Dermot Harkin all brilliantly saved by McColgan. Cockhill were always dangerous on the break and Cockhill advanced to the next round.

Doherty double sends Rasheney on their way

Sea Rovers Res   0-5    Rasheney FC

Played on Friday night in the Isle of Doagh first division Rasheney proved much too strong for the first division reserve side. Rasheney dominated throughout with Damien Friel advancing into the area on the left and hooked the ball over keeper Michael Smith but the ball rebounded off the post on 8 minutes. They opened the scoring when Friel set up Brian Doherty and he drove an angled shot low across Smith to the bottom corner. Barney Friel then saw his cross punched clear by Smith before Emyln Doherty fired over from twenty two yards. Midway through the half the home side went close again when John Doherty unmarked saw his effort crash off the bar. Alan Friel then had an effort cleared off the line by Rovers William Doherty before they added a second on 33 minutes after Alan Friel crossed to John Doherty who swept the ball home from twelve yards.Rovers responded with Thomas McLaughlin denied by a last ditch Paddy Nelson tackle. On the stroke of half time Rovers had a let off after Emyln Doherty’s twenty yards effort rebounded off the post into Smiths arms. On 51 minutes Rasheney made it three nil after a powerful Sean Doherty run saw him lay off to Kevin Noone to drive low and hard to the bottom corner from fifteen yards. Minutes later they added another when Alan Friel’s cross found Damien Friel whose piledriver was well parried by Smith but John Doherty headed the loose ball home from close range.They continued on top with substitute Damien Harkin denied by an excellent save by Smith before the keeper tipped over a header from Friel.Rasheney completed the scoring when Emyln Doherty fired a twenty yards effort over Smith to the roof of the net.

Donaghey fires Cockhill into next round

Cockhill Res        1-0    Sea Rovers FC

The home side caused a minor upset and started the game really well.They took the lead when Donal O’Brien’s free was headed back across the area by Simon Cuffe to Sean Donaghey who slotted home from close range.Tommy Doherty then fired into the side netting before another free by O’Brien was parried by Seamus Houten who recovered well to block Brendan Gillespie’s follow up.The home side had another chance on the restart when Cuffe fed Gary Breslin but Houten saved brilliantly.Rovers came more into the game and on 55 minutes Finbarr Collins volleyed just wide from a corner before the same player fired wide from the edge of the area.Conor Farren then ran onto Collins through ball but was denied by a superb smothering save from Liam Lynch. Cockhill broke on 81 minutes when Gillespie fed Cuffe who fired over from the edge of the area. Rovers applied pressure in the closing minutes but the home defence with O’Brien and Gillespie in fine form stood firm.  

Grant double sees Point upset Colts

Gleneely Colts               2-3              QPS Res

Played in Gleneely in good conditions the Point reserve team were more than a match for the first division side. They started well with Paul Grant’s header from a Dean Hegarty corner well saved by Keith McLaughlin. The colts replied and Declan Kearney fired a twenty five yards free just wide.Hegarty responded with a free gathered at the second attempt by McLaughlin in the colts goal.The  point took the lead midway through the half after Grant headed home at the back post following another Hegarty corner.On 31 minutes the colts TJ McKinley put in a dangerous cross but there were no takers before Ruairi Kelly had a twenty five yards effort turned round the post by Laurence Lynch in the visitors goal.Kearney then was unlucky when his free rattled the post and was cleared to safety. Gleneely upped the pressure before the break but failed to create clear openings. The point doubled their lead on 51 minutes when Paul Hegarty laid a free off to Grant who fired a superb left footed effort to the top corner from twenty five yards. Another Hegarty free fell to Hugo Curran unmarked but he failed to hit the target from ten yards before Grant found Paul Hegarty whose volley was brilliantly turned round the post by McLaughlin.Gleneely started to push men forward and on 79 minutes Kearney’s corner was headed over by Daniel Nolan before McKinley was denied by a fine save from Lynch with Alex O’Brien clearing the loose ball off the line. The point made it three nil when Fergal Buchanan crossed for Mark Wallace to fire low to the net from twelve yards. In injury time the colts got one back when Johnathan Mclaughlin headed a Kearney free home from six yards. Deep in injury time Mclaughlin headed a Kearney corner home to make it three two. An incident on the stroke of half time both sides were reduced to ten men when Hugo Cuirran and Barry Diver were red carded.

Doherty spot kick decides the issue

Rasheney Res      0-1    Carn FC    

The visitors had an early chance when Brendan Tabb fired just wide of the post from the edge of the area.Rasheney replied with Michael Doherty and John Grant having half chances which the Carn defence cleared. Carn had most of the possession with Andrew Doherty’s driven corner hacked clear by the home defence. Tiernan Coyne cut in from the left but keeper Sean Friel advanced to block. Before the break Rasheney could have taken a surprise lead after Michael Doherty  ran onto a Michael Kelly pass to outrun the Carn defence but Declan O’Donnell advanced to smother well at his feet.At the other end Coyne got on the end of a Liam Doherty cross but fired inches wide as the half ended scoreless. Carn got off to a dream start within minutes of the restart when Cathal Doherty converted a penalty awarded after Dermot Doherty had been upended. Dermot Doherty then crossed low across the face of goal but it eluded all before at the end of twp excellent moves Dermot Doherty crossed but Liam Doherty fired wide before Eanna Newton saw his diving header fly just over.Rasheney replied with Donal Kelly running from halfway past the Carn defence but fired wide of O’Donnells left hand post. The home side pushed hard and had two claims for penalties waved aside Carn broke with Cathal Doherty’ stwenty five yards free clipping the top of the bar. On 80 minutes the home side’s John Grant raced clear of the home defence but lacked composure and fired well wide in their best chance to force extra time.     

McQuillan hat trick sinks Carn Res                   

Carn Res             0-5    Greencastle FC

An understrength home side were no match for the first division Greencastle.The visitors started well with Paddy keys denied by Shane Gibbons in the opening minutes.carn replied with Ryan Kelly breaking clean through but keeper Cavanagh saved well. Greencastle opened the scoring on the half hour after Gerard McQuillan fired low to the corner from fifteen yards. The same player made it two nil when he fired to the top corner from a tight angle five minutes later. The home side were reduced to ten men after Brian Lafferty was redcarded for retaliation.Minutes later the visitors JP O’Doherty fired a thirty yards free in off the underside of the bar. It was four nil on 41 minutes when Gibbons parried a McQuillan effort and Keys slotted the loose ball home. Carn came more into the game but fell further behind on 65 minutes when McQuillan completed his hat trick tapping home after a scramble.

Gleneely win local derby

Gleneely started the game well and a long ball from JP Houten found Christy Smith to fire to the top corner from the edge of the area past Mark Doherty after only three minutes. Carrowmena replied with Ryan Killen feeding PJ Thompson but he fired just over. Before the break Gleneely’s Corey O’Brien fired a twenty five yards free to the top corner to double the lead.On the stroke of half time the home defence lost possession allowing Danny McLaughlin feed Smith to fire low past Doherty from twelve yards and make it three nil. Carrowmena started the second period well with Thompson feeding Mark McGonagle but his effort was well saved by Houten low to his right. Midway through the half the visitors John Doherty and William Hutchinson combined for Hutchinson to advance up the left  but his low effort was well saved by Doherty. Carrowmena had shots from Declan & Anthony McDermott well dealt with by Houten before on 88 minutes the visitors scored their fourth after John Doherty advanced on the right and his cross deflected off a defender to the net off the post. 

McLaughlin strikes on the double for Cockhill

In the opening minute the visitors opened the scoring after Aiden Porter crossed for Kieran McLaughlin to head past Michael McCole at the back post. The home side replied with Seamus Farren feeding Brendan Murphy but his dangerous cross eluded all before Greg Breslin crossed to Trevor davenport at the back post but he headed wide with the goal gaping.At the other end Martin Donaghey headed a James O’Donnell corner over the top before they increased their lead on 31 minutes when Mc Laughlin slid in to divert a Seamus Gill shot to the corner of the net with McCole stranded. Redcastle immediately replied with Murphy firing a superb shot to the top corner from the angler of the area. Cockhill responded with Porter failing to hit the target from a good position. Cockhill increased their lead following an Eamon Porter corner which Aiden Porter looped a header over McCole from ten yards.On the hour at the other end Niall McColgan fired wide from distance. Cockhill replied with Donaghey heading over following a corner. Eamon Porter dangerous cross was then gathered by substitute keeper Liam Davenport before the same player had an effort clip the top of the bar.The final chance fell to the home side when James Curran laid the ball off to Farren but he fired over the bar from fourteen yards.

Culdaff pay the price for missed chances

The visitors started the game very well but missed numerous chances in the opening period. Dean O’Connor had one effort cleared off the line before seeing another effort rebound off the post. Culdaff took the lead after a corner was returned to the back post and Michael Coyle slotted low past Jamie McGowan. Aileach equalized on 41 minutes when Gavin Doherty crossed to the back post for Conor Gallagher to slot home.They stunned the visitors in injury time when they took the lead after Graham Brown beat the offside trap and lobbed Houten from the edge of the area.On the restart the visitors Stuart McKeague fired inches over the top from twenty yards.Aileach broke on the hour with Liam Burke lifting the ball over Houten from eight yards after a great ball from Gerard Arbuckle.They increased their lead on 75 minutes when Gallagher was set up by Dermot McGlynn and he rounded Houten to slot home. Culdaff battled back well and reduced the deficit when McKeague’s free was parried by McGowan allowing Barry Fitzpatrick to slam the loose ball home.They continued to push forward but the home defence stood firm.
