Knockalla Caravans Shield Final

Spurned opportunities cost Aileach dearly

Aileach FC                  1-2       Swilly Rovers

Despite being the better side for long periods missed chances cost Aileach dearly as they lost out to Swilly Rovers in the inaugural Knockalla Caravans Senior Shield Final. Aileach started well and in the opening minute Thomas McMonagle broke on the left but his cross was just ahead of Anthony Doherty and gathered by keeper Glen Watson.Swilly replied with Laurence Toland gaining possession on the left and firing over from twenty yards.On 12 minutes Stephen O’Donnell’s free kick from the edge of the area was turned behind at full stretch by Watson before Gregory Doherty slipped the ball in to Anthony Doherty but he blazed over from twelve yards.Midway through the half an Aileach corner fell to Neil McElhinney whose volley was blocked by a defender to Damien Barr whose follow up failed to hit the target.On 26 minutes they went close again when Gregory Doherty’s well struck volley was finger tipped behind by Watson at full stretch.Swilly lifted the pressure on 32 minutes when Richard McGinley’s corner was headed over by Michael Lynch.But Aileach replied again with Damien Barr’s driven effort gathered by Watson.Against the run of play Swilly struck for the opening goal on 36 minutes when Stephen Donaghey’s snapshot from twenty yards flew past Kevin McDermott to the bottom right hand corner after his initial effort had been blocked. Before the break they went close again with Lynch having his header palmed away by McDermott.The pace of the game dropped after the break but on 57 minutes James Gillespie whipped in a free from the left which eluded all.On 74 minutes a superb cross from the left by McMonagle found substitute Stephen Doherty who failed to connect with a header with only Watson to beat.Aileach leveled two minutes later when Stephen Doherty fed Barr who attempted to lift the ball over the centre half and when he handled referee McAree had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.Stephen O’Donnell confidently stepped up to slot low to the bottom right hand corner.Swilly were stung into action and a brilliant McGinley cross was superbly headed clear by Cathal McElhinney.Swilly struck for the winner on 85 minutes when McGinley played a short free to Jason McAnallen and he fired a brilliant twenty two yards effort to the top corner for a goal worthy of winning any game.Aileach threw caution to the wind but failed to force extra time.

 

 

 

 

 

Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup   

Gweedore United       4-0       Dunree United

Dunree began well with Philip McGuinness breaking clear but seeing his effort well saved by the home custodian.The home side settled and took the lead five minutes later when the Dunree defence misjudged a long ball over the top and Kevin McFadden pounced to drill the ball past Johnathan Noone.They increased their lead on 33 minutes when the home defence hesitated and Kevin Harkin nipped in between defenders and shoot low to the net from fifteen yards.Dunree went close on 42 minutes after Shaun Doherty’s cross was headed down by Kieran McGrory but blocked on the line by the keeper.Midway through the second period the home side sealed the tie when McFadden broke clear to round Noone and slot the ball home.McFadden completed his hat trick late on when he converted a Fionan Diver cross from seven yards

Hirrell heads Carn into the semi finals

Carn FC          3-2       Moville Celtic           

Played in good conditions the home side started well and took the lead on 3 minutes when Robert McCartney’s free was volleyed home by Kevin Hirrell.They went close again minutes later when Christy Nelson had an effort well saved by Emmet McLaughlin.Moville replied with Declan McGuinness having a volley well saved by Ritchie Cunningham before Benny Mullan pounced on a loose ball but his driven effort crashed off the legs of Cunningham before being cleared.They leveled on 27 minutes fater a long kick out was headed on by Graeme Doherty to Mullan who hooked the ball home on the volley from fourteen yards.Graeme Doherty then had a snapshot superbly saved by Cunningham high to his left before the game changed in a two minute spell.On 36 minutes Emmet O’Brien found Niall McLaughlin on the right and his cross was volleyed to the bottom corner by Darren Burke from twelve yards before in the next attack McCartney’s free found the unmarked Hirrell and he headed home.Moville tried to respond and on the stroke of half time Graeme Doherty had an effort punched clear by Cunningham.    

Two goal Doherty inspires comeback for Aileach

Aileach FC      6-2       Keadue Rovers

Played in very breezy conditions the visitors got off to a dream start when they took the lead after 5 minutes when following a scramble Martin Doherty poked home.Aileach replied with Anthony Doherty having an effort well saved by Barry McGowan before Dermot Doherty broke clean through but fired wide.  Keadue made it two nil on 39 minutes after Aiden O’Hanlon ran onto a through ball and fired low past Kevin McDermott.Aileach got one back on the stroke of half time after Anthony Doherty converted from close range after the visitors defence failed to clear.They leveled on 50 minutes when Dermot Doherty scored direct from a corner before following another corner the unmarked Cathal McElhinney headed home.The home side increased their lead on the hour after Damien Barr broke clear and when his shot was parried by McGowan to Anthony Doherty to fire home.The visitors were reduced to ten men at this stage and Aileach took full advantage when Thomas McMonagle beat the offside trap to chip McGowan from twelve yards.They completed the scoring when Stephen O’Donnell fired a superb shot off the underside of the bar from twenty five yards.

Clonmany prove too strong for Cockhill               

Cockhill Celtic            1-3       Clonmany Shamrocks                       

Clonmany advanced to the semi finals of the Knockalla Cup with this fully deserved three one defeat of senior league Cockhill.After an even opening Clonmany took the lead in the 20th minute when Stephen McLaughlin crossed for Raymond McDaid to chip Shane Galvin from twelve yards.Minutes later they doubled their lead when Paul McLaughlin crossed from the right for Jason Devlin to head past Galvin from fourteen yards.The home side got one back before the break after Aiden O’Donnell sprinted clear of the Clonmany defence before slotting low past Peter Devlin.Clonmany hit back on the stroke of half time when McLaughlin’s corner was headed down into the ground and to the roof of the net by Philip Devlin.On the restart a swift Clonmany break ended with McLaughlin’s cross eluding all.Cockhill replied and on the hour Derek Doherty fired just over from twenty yards.Clonmany finished the better when substitute Brendan Devlin’s cross was headed down by Michael Byrne to McDaid but he volleyed over.Then on 80 minutes Devlin’s shot was parried by Galvin who recovered well to punch Devlin’s follow up.

 

 

Knockalla Caravans Senior Shield Semi -final         

Carn FC            1-2            Aileach FC   

Despite facing the threat of  relegation and short a couple of key players Aileach turned in a superb performance to qualify for the inaugural Knockalla Caravans Senior Shield Final. The home sie had a great chance in the opening minutes after Darren Loftus released Christy McLaughlin to beat the offside trap but his shot drew a fine save low to his left from Sean McKay.On 7minutes the home defence failed to clear and Declan O’Donnell fired a superb twenty five yards effort to the bottom corner.They almost added another before the break following a corner when the ball broke to Cathal McElhinney but he poked wide from close range.On the stroke of half tiem the home side spurned a great chance to get back on terms when McLaughlin’s penalty kick awarded after Loftus was upended was superbly saved low to his right by McKay.On 55 minutes Christy Nelson’s free found Darren Burke but he headed over.The introduction of Emmet O’Brien and Anthony Toland after the hour mark gave the home side new impetus with O’Brien going close with one effort on the run.They leveled on 75 minutes when O’Brien ‘s superb cross from the right found Loftus who headed home at the back post.The home side went all out for the winner but hesitance in the home defence on 86 minutes allowed Anthony Doherty to cross from the byline to Gregory Doherty to slide the ball low past Padraig Doherty from twelve yards and send Aileach into the final where they await the winners of Killea and Swilly Rovers.

Drumkeen United             2-3            Redcastle United.

Despite fielding a majority of their reserve team Redcastle produced a superb performance to oust Drunkeen.The home side started better and on 5 minutes Chris Kyle’s ball over the top found Jamie Gallagher but his attempted lob crashed off the bar.Redcastle replied and went close when Stephen Davenport fired just over from twenty five yards.The visitors wentr close again when Gavin McCauley beat a defender and crossed for Brendan Murphy to volley wide.Midway through the period the home side spurned a great chance after Richard Moore broke from midfield but fluffed his effort straight at Liam Davenport.Redcastle replied on the half hour when Joe Doherty crossed from the right but Murphy slotted wide at the back post.In the next attack Redcastle opened the scoring when Murphy’s ball over the top found Doherty who lobbed keeper Paul McCauley from twenty five yards.Drunkeen upped the pace and keeper Liam Davenport denied Philip White and Gary Patton either side of the break.On 55 minutes Redcastle broke and great work by Joe Doherty saw him square to Murphy to slot home from close range.Almost immediately Drumkeen got one back when John Gallagher set up Moore and he fired low past Davenport from inside the area.Doherty and Murphy then combined to set up Colm McLaughlin but his effort was blocked.On 62 minutes Redcastle increased their lead when a dreadful error by McCauley saw him score an own goal.Drumkeen got a consolation on 87 minutes after Benny Bonner crossed for Mark Mailey to head past Davenport from six yards.
