Mourne Harps           2-0       Dunree United

Dunree began well and in the 3rd minute Derek Murphy fed Philip McGuinness who jinked his way into the area but saw his left footed effort crash of the angle of post and bar.Mourne replied ten minutes later and broke the deadlock after Mickey Logue’s corner was headed back across goal by John Roulstone to Gerard Murray to slam the ball past Johnathan Noone from seven yards. Midway through the half they went close again after Jason McGonigle’s snapshot produced a brilliant one handed save from Noone as it sped towards the top corner. Dunree settled and on the half hour Jason McLaughlin sent McGuinness away on the left and when he crossed to Kieran McGrory his flick cannoned off the bar. Play swung to the other end with McGonigle heading Logue’s corner over the top. Dunree replied and Liam Baldrick had a shot from twenty yards land on top of the net before McGuiness’s corner found the unmarked McLaughlin but he headed over the top. Before the break Mourne had another effort when Logue’s cross was powerfully headed just over by McGonigle. Dunree started the second period well and a superb run and cross by McGuinness produced a corner which Baldrick headed over when fell placed. Before the hour mark Kieran McGrory had a twenty yards effort well saved by Conor McGrath. Mourne went close twice in as many minutes when on 75 minutes Jason McGrinder dispossessed a defender but saw his powerful shot beaten away by Noone before Roulstone found space in the area but saw his low driven effort crash off the legs of Noone. Hesitantcy in the Mourne defence allowed McGrory a clear sight of goal but his attempted chip drifted well wide. Mourne finished well with Noone producing a flying save to deny Logue from a free kick before the Strabane side sealed the win on 85 minutes when Roulstone flicked on to McGrinder who acrobatically flicked the ball past Noone from close range.

Bohemians      2-0       Redcastle United

Bohemians were good value for their 2-0 victory over Redcastle in this North West Champions League match played at the Brandywell on Wednesday night. Redcastle who three days earlier had qualified for the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup after extra time on a heavy pitch looked a little tired with very little happening in the first 15min. Redcastle’s Paul Doherty forced a corner on 11min and Bohemians Paul Biddle played Sean Martin down the right but his cross was well behind, Biddle made a good run on 20 min but his effort from 20yds was wide of goal. Redcastle had a great chance to open the scoring on 26min when neat play by Benny Mc Dermott and Charlie Mc Cormick set up Paul Doherty but with just Mc Geady to beat in the Bohemians net he lifted his shot over from 14yds. Bohemians took the lead on 32min when a free from the left by Sean Liddey slipped under Davenport and into the net. Redcastle had a chance on 42min following a scramble in the box the ball fell to Eddie Mc Intyre but his effort was deflected wide. Redcastle upped the tempo at the start of the second half but rarely troubled Mc Geady in the Bohs net with Benny Mc Dermott’s header on the hour mark just over the bar their best effort. In the 62min Sean Liddy set up Colm Deery but Martin Farren was on hand to block his shot and then on 68min Liddy played a good through ball to Paul Biddle on the left and he lifted the ball over the advancing Davenport for Marty Dillon to tap into the empty net. Eddie Mc Intyre made a good run on 71min but his shot from 25yds sailed over the bar. Bohemians could have made it three on 80min when Dillon broke clear but with just Davenport to beat he was harshly blown offside by the ref.

Dunree United  0-3  Bohemians

This was a game of two half’s  as Dunree playing with the breeze in the first half dominated most of the play and came close on several occasions the first on 11 minutes when Derek Murphy fired a free from 35 yards which Emmet Mc Clafferty in the Bohs net done well to turn around the post.On 20 minutes Liam Baldrick’s free from 20 yards came off the upright with Mc Clafferty beaten. Dunree had the ball in the net shortly afterwards following a good move involving Damian Coyle, Seamus Gill and Kieran Mc Grory only for their effort to be ruled offside. On 34 minutes Liam Baldrick floated in a free from the right which the Bohs keeper failed to hold and both Ryan Bradley and Mc Grory had attempts to force the ball home but Bohemians somehow managed to scramble the ball away. Six minutes before the break Bohemians took the lead with a long ball over the top from Sean Liddy found Pearse Biddle and when he cut in from the left his shot was blocked by Jonathan Noone but Biddle forced the rebound home in what was their first real chance of the half. Bohemians introduced Austin Ford at the start of the second half and playing with the breeze were a much different team. On 52 minutes Forde cut in from the left but he shot straight at Noone in the Dunree goal before on the hour Bohemians made it two when Pearse Liddle cross wasn’t dealt with by the Dunree defence and Sean Liddy nipped in to score from 6yds. Liddle then had a shot from the edge of the area turned around the post by Noone before Dunree created a good opening involving four players and Ryan Bradley’s shot cannoned off a defender for a corner. On 75 minutes Forde broke clear and rounded the advancing Noone but his goal bound effort came off the arm of the defender for a penalty which Sean Liddy duly dispatched to the net. Dunree to their credit continued to press and were unlucky when Sean Doherty’s floated in a free to the back post but William Baldrick shot was just the wrong side of the post .

Clonmany Shamrocks                        1-0       Carn FC

In a scrappy encounter the visitors had the first chance on 26 minutes when Robert McCartney’s inswinging free kick was punched clear by Peter Devlin.Clonmany replied with Liam Hirrell crosing for Michael Grant who seemed to be impeded but penalty claims were waved away. Before the break Brendan Devlin released Grant but he failed to hit the target from a good position. The home side broke the deadlock on 50 minutes after Joe Grant advanced up the right and played a one two with brother Michael before running into the area and slotting low past Richard Cunningham from eight yards.Carn defended well with Kevin Hirrell and Christy Nelson prominent but the shamrocks with Raymond McDaid and Paddy Doherty driving them from midfield spurned a few good openings.By virtue of this victory the home side have now qualified for the semi finals

Carn FC            0-0            Clifton Villa

Played in bitterly cold conditions on Easter Saturday both teams had chances but failed to take them in the end.Christy McLaughlin for the home side fired a free kick just over the bar before a long kick out found Carl Deeney and he lifted his effort well over.On 15 minutes  confusion in the Villa defence allowed Charles Fayet feed McLaughlin but he drilled wide from fourteen yards.Villa responded with Chris McGarrigle’s inswinging corner clipping the top of the bar before a good lay off by Sean Paul Nash to James Boyd saw Boyd’s shot well saved at the second attempt by Ritchie Cunningham.            Carn replied with great control by Fayet sending McLaughlin clear into the area but he dragged his shot well wide.Villa upped the pace at this with McGarrigle volleying over following a long throw. On 42 minutes Stephen McCallion had a powerful header beaten away by Cunningham before on the stroke of half time a flowing move from the visitors ended with Deeney controlling well only to see his effort well saved by Cunningham.

Villa ought to have broken the deadlock in the 48th minute when in a quick break Nash had a shot cleared off the line by Kevin Hirrell before Hirell headed Deeney’s follow up over the top.On the hour the home side went close when Christy McLaughlin’s snapshjot through a crowd of players was superbly saved low to his right by Conor McFadden. Substitute Brendan Doherty was sent clear on the left by Deeney but as he bore down on goal Hirrell got across to block again. The final chance fell to McLaughlin for the home side but his free kick was claimed at the second attempt by Fadden.

North West of Ireland Champions League Gregory Kearney Cup.

Clifton Villa                2          Clonmany Shamrocks                        1

Played in windy wintry conditions in the Brandywell this was an entertaining game and one which Clonmany will feel they should not have lost. But defensive errors gave Villa both goals and against opposition of this standard you cannot afford errors.Clonmany were first to threaten on 12 minutes when Philip Devlin headed wide at the back post from a Darragh Doherty freekick.Villa replied and twice balls into the Clonmany area were not collected by the usually reliable Peter Devlin. On twenty minutes Villa went close when Oisin McGowan fed Damien Harkin inside the area but his close range effort drifted wide. Minutes later they took the lead when Dee McGinley converted a penalty after a clumsy challenge on Carl Deery was punished. Before the half hour Clonmany went close when a good move saw Raymond McDaid find Brendan Devlin on the right hand side of the area and his angled shot was parried away by Gavin Bradley. Villa replied with a swift counter attack which saw Sean Paul Nash denied by a brilliant Philpat Doherty tackle inside the area. On 33 minutes Villa broke again on the right with Deery advancing and seeing his attempted cross drift onto the net.Clonmany leveled on 40 minutes after substitute Michael Byrne fed Brendan Devlin and his shot on the turn flew past Bradley from twenty two yards for a superb finish. Before the break the Inishowen side went close when Paul Mclaughlin fired just over the top from a free kick on the edge of the area.Clonmany started the second half better and when Steve Harkin picked up a poor headed clearance he volleyed just wide. McLaughlin then crossed for Devlin whose firm header was well gathered by Bradley before on 65 minutes Devlin controlled well but volleyed wide from twenty yards. Villa tried to reply with Kevin Cassidy’s shot from distance well gathered by Devlin in the shamrocks goal. On 68 minutes a poor defensive header allowed substitute Oran Cassidy to sweep the ball to the top corner from close range and restore Villa’s advantage. This seemed to deflate Clonmany and Villa were the more threatening with Cassidy having an effort tipped over the top by Devlin before full back Gerard Downey advanced and unleashed a powerful drive which went inches over.Clonmany for their part now know that nothing less than victory over Carn in their final group game will be enough.

North West Champions League

Brandywell Celtic       5-1       Carn FC

Played at the Brandywell the Derry side fully deserved their victory over an understrength Carn side who also suffered badly from the hamstring injury sustained before the break by Kevin Hirrell. Carn began well and in the opening minute Robert McCartney broke on the left and cut in before seeing his shot parried by keeper Conleth McCrudden at the near post. Celtic replied and when Paul Gormley pounced on a loose ball his dipping effort crashed off the bar. Celtic spurned a great opening on 19 minutes when Gormley was upended  but Brendan Canning’s spot kick was well saved by Richard Cunningham who reacted smartly to smother the rebound. Before the half hour Gary Collett fed Denny Villa who found Canning but his twenty yards strike was well saved by Cunningham. Minutes later Villa fed James melly who controlled well but fired just over the top from twenty yards. Before the break Carn forced a corner and when Christy McLaughlin’s delivery was not cleared Christy Nelson slammed the ball home from six yards. Celtic started the second period the better and Collett crossed from the left for Martin Doherty to head over. They leveled on 64 minutes when Melly crossed from the right for Gormley to head past substitute keeper JJ Doherty from eight yards. Carn replied and when Charles Fayed burst through the middle a Celtic defender seemed to handle but the referee allowed fayed the advantage but he failed to capitalize. Celtic replied and blitzed Carn with three goals in the next five minutes. On 68 minutes Melly’s low cross from the right found Villa whose flick goalwards was parried by Doherty but Martin Doherty dived full length to head home from seven yards. Collett then found space on the right and his looping cross deceived all and dropped in at the back post before Canning’s corner fell to Martin Doherty to slam the ball home from eight yards. They completed the scoring on 84 minutes after the Carn defence tried to walk the ball out and were dispossessed allowing Gormley to run through and slide the ball home from ten yards.
