Clonmany Shamrocks 2-0 Brandywell Celtic
Clonmany showed their intent right from the start taking the game to Brandywell and were in control particularly in midfield for the first 20min. They had a chance on 6 minutes when Paul Mc Laughlin’s corner was headed down by Martin Doherty to Steve Harkin but he directed his effort from 8yds over the bar.On 20 minutes Martin Doherty tried his luck from 20yds but again it sailed over. Brandywell replied and had their first chance on 25 minutes when Tommy Mc Donald played Sammy Robinson down the right but his low cross into the box found no takers. Ten minutes later Brandywell’s Marty Doherty attempted to chip Peter Devlin in the Clonmany goal but Devlin was alert and gathered well. On 33 minutes later Tommy Mc Donald broke clear but Devlin was quick off his line to block his shot at the expense of a corner while just before half time Brandywell were awarded a indirect free inside the box and when Marty Doherty laidd it off to Liam Mc Guinness his driven shot was blocked by Devlin and cleared by Philip Devlin. Clonmany got off to the perfect start to the second half when on 49 minutes Joe Grant’s long free into the box saw Brandywell’s keeper Gary Doherty fail to hold under pressure and the ball fell to Philip Devlin who drove low to the net from 6yds. They increased their lead on 59 min when Paul Mc Laughlin’s free from 25yds took a deflection off a defender and past the stranded Doherty in the Brandywell goal. On 63 minutes Paul Mc Laughlin made a great run into the box and pulled the ball back for Martin Doherty whose goal bound effort was blocked by Mark Dillon. Brandywell replied and Paul Gormley’s shot from 30yds brought a fine save from Devlin before Gormley headed over from a Liam Mc Guinness free. Clonmany’s Liam Diver created a good chance for himself on 75 minutes but he failed to hit the target.Brandywell had the last chance when Stephen Melly’s free from the left found Liam Mc Guinness but his header sailed over the bar .Clonmany now know that a win over Dunree in their final group game will see them into the semi finals as they bid to regain the trophy after last years success.
North West Champions League
Clifton Villa 2-1 QPS
The point will wonder how they failed to take three points as they dominated for long periods but failed to add the crucial second goal. In the process they conceded a bizarre own goal and a penalty against a Villa side reduced to ten men for almost the entire second half. The point started well with Paul Grant firing a superb angled ball to Bob Buchanan but he over hit the cross before they took the lead on 13 minutes. Buchanan was again involved as he skipped inside the tackle and when the ball ran loose Anthony McColgan fired a superb twenty yarder to the top right hand corner past Gavin Bradley.Minutes later they created another good opening after Seannan McColgan burst up the left and crossed for Buchanan who laid off to Donny Bell and as he bore down on goal his effort was brilliantly blocked by Paul Doherty.Bell had another good chance on the half hour after a defender misjudged the bounce and the point man ran from halfway but his attempted lob drifted wide when he should have carried on into the area.Villa replied on 32 minutes with their first chance when Sean Paul Nash slipped the ball into the left channel to Paul Doherty but he fired across goal and wide of the far post.Minutes later an Oisin McGowan corner was headed out to Gary Cassidy but his driven effort was blocked allowing Paul Doherty to shoot wide from ten yards in what was a difficult chance. On 41 minutes a quick free from Grant fed Buchanan who laid the ball off to Seannan McColgan who raced into the area but dragged his left footed effort across goal and just past the post.Villa replied before the break when good work by Paul Doherty saw him square to McGowan but from a good position inside the area his shot was blocked. It looked all over for Villa when Gary Cassidy was redcarded on 50 minutes but minutes later Paul Brown’s free from wide on the right crashed off the angle of post and bar. They got back on terms in bizarre fashion on 64 minutes. Substitute keeper Damien Doherty saw had the ball in his hands and when he went to kick clear the ball hit a Villa player on the back and broke kindly for Paul Doherty to slot the loose ball home. The point replied and should have regained the lead three minutes later when good work by Buchanan saw him feed substitute Brendan McIvor and his shot from twenty yards clipped the outside of the post.Villa took the lead on 72 minutes when in a quick break Paul Doherty was upended in the area allowing Cathal Sharkey to coolly slot past Doherty. The point threw everything forward and on 82 minutes Buchanan’s effort took a deflection but Bradley reacted well to claw the ball away at the base of his left hand post. In the follow up Dean Barron burst past three players into the area and fired a cross shot just past the far post. The point continued to press but failed to create any clear openings and this victory sees Villa virtually seal a semi final position.
North West Champions League
Mourne Harps 3 QPS 1
Played in good conditions the point got off to a good start but missed chances saw them pay for it in the final analysis. On 5 minutes Brendan McIvor flicked on for Aiden Lynch who burst into the area but hesitated and was denied by a superb tackle from Stephen Roulston. Six minutes later Lynch turned the ball inside to Terry McColgan who released Sean McLaughlin and when he ran into the area his effort was deflected behind by the excellent Stephen Lindsay.Chances continued to come for the Inishowen side and on 14 minutes a superb cross from the right by Lynch found McLaughlin but he mistimed his header and the chance was lost.In the opening period Mourne had shown themselves to be a slick moving outfit with striker John Roulston twice beating David McGeady to the ball but on each occasion the keepers defence came to the rescue. The visitors having survived all attacks on their goal suddenly broke forward and opened the scoring on 18 minutes after a corner was headed out to the edge of the area where the unmarked Michael Logue volleyed to the roof of the net for an excellent finish. This knocked the point from their rhythm and Harps went close again on 28 minutes after John Roulston laid the ball off to Fergal McGavigan and he fired inches over from twenty yards.Harps increased their lead on 43 minutes when a free kick from wide on the right was headed clear by Kevin Wallace but when Logue returned the ball over the top Roulston reacted quickest to slide the ball low past McGeady. On the restart the point were first to show when Terry McColgan beat a couple of players but fired wide.At the other end Roulston flashed a cross from the left across the face of goal but it eluded all.Harps shuld have increased their lead on 69 minutes when Roulston’s free found Logue totally unmarked but he somehow blazed over from point blank range. The point were reduced to ten men on 80 minutes after Terry McColgan received a second yellow card which seemed a bit harsh but a minute later they got right back into the contest when Seanan McColgan was upended in the area AND Anthony McColgan stepped up to fire past Lindsay.Their hopes of a revival were cut short on 86 minutes when Logue’s inswinging free kick was tipped over by McGeady and from the corner Michael Mongan scored with a superb near post header.
Man of the Match
Stephen Lindsay While not under major pressure the harps custodian was superb in controlling his area and rarely wasted a clearance.
Turning point
Without doubt Mourne’s second goal left the point with a mountain to climb coming as it did on the stroke of half time.
Ref Watch
Referee Charlie Doherty controlled the game well overall and kept a tight rein on things. The sending off was probably a bit harsh but you could understand why he deemed it a second yellow card offence.
North West Champions League
Entertaining scoreless encounter at Caratra.
Dunree United 0-0 Brandywell Celtic
As scoreless draws goes this was an entertaining encounter and one which although Brandywell had more possession it could be argued that Dunree had the clearest chances.Dunree were dealt an early blow when Liam Baldrick limped off with hamstring trouble to be replaced by Sean Doherty after7 minutes. They created a good opening on 16 minutes when they were awarded a free on the edge of the area for keeper Doherty coming outside his area to gather. From the free the ball broke to Derek Murphy who crossed to Brendan McDaid but he failed to get enough power on his effort and the chance was lost.Brandywell replied on 27 minutes when the impressive Gary Collett on the left crossed for the unmarked Paul Gormley to slot wide from fourteen yards.Minutes later Tommy McDonald ‘s chest lay off to Collett who saw his effort gathered by Johnathan Noone.Gormley then turned well on the edge of the area but curled his effort over the top before Collett returned the ball to the danger area after a corner for Bobby Coyle to see his low effort well saved by Noone. On the stroke of half time Dunree replied when a defensive error allowed Paddy Mc Laughlin to slip the ball through to Ryan Bradley but he was just beaten to the ball by the advancing Gary Doherty.Brandywell carved out a great chance two minutes after the restart when Sammy Robinson crossed from the right but Gormley unmarked at the back post headed over when he should have done better. Before the hour Collett’s delivery from a corner was met by a powerful downward header from Stephen Melly which drifted just wide. They went close again on 67 minutes following a corner when the ball broke to Denny Villa but his effort was deflected over by the advancing Noone.Dunree replied and Derek Murphy flashed a twenty yards effort just past the post. They almost snatched a win on 81 minutes when Jason McLaughlin advanced from halfway and played a one two with Patrick McLaughlin to find himself in the clear but his shot was brilliantly saved by keeper Doherty.
