Oscar Traynor Inter League Trophy Semi Final

Inishowen League                  0-1       Limerick League

Played in blustery conditions both teams had their periods of dominance but the most disappointing thing for the home side is that they failed to reach the level of performance they put in against the AUL in the previous round. In the early stages Nigel McMonagle escaped the shackles of the visitors defence but was denied by the advancing Alan Gilmartin.Midway through the half Paul McLaughlin’s corner was headed on by Dermot Diver but again Gilmartin gathered at full stretch.Joe Doherty then laid the ball back to Steve Harkin but he fired just over before McLaughlin’s free from the left found Martin Farren but under pressure he headed wide.Against the run of play Limerick took the lead on 42 minutes when Ger Bourke squeezed the ball through a packed Inishowen defence for Tony Heffernan to poke past Gerard Crossan with the home defence appealing in vain for offside.Inishowen replied before the interval with Philip McGuinness’s cross causing confusion in the Limerick defence but no Inishowen player could take advantage. Limerick started the second period well with Jason Wong firing off the crossbar from a tight angle before Alan Carroll was denied by a superb interception by Martin Farren. An inswinging Wong corner on the hour eluded all before a low ball in to the area by Mike Behan was blocked by Crossan who also cleared the follow up from Heffernan off the line.Inishowen tried hard to respond  but the nearest they came was on 82 minutes when substitute Jimmy Gallagher’s pass almost sent McMonagle clear but he was denied by fullback Diarmuid Ryan.A disappointing end to the campaign but once again the players and management have proved they are capable of competing at the highest level.

Oscar Traynor Inter League Trophy

Leinster FL  1      Inishowen FL 2

A  much  changed Inishowen side traveled to Dublin last weekend and came away with a fantastic and  well deserved victory over the Leinster FL played in a constant downpour at Westmanstown. The home side settled well and in the opening minutes Richard Parsons had  a clear sight of goal but dragged his effort from fourteen yards wide of the right hand post.Minutes later the Inishowen defence was caught out by a long ball but keeper Gerard Crossan forced Donal Gilmer wide and he blazed well over.Inishowen settled and Anthony Doherty had a snapshot well off target before they took the lead on 18 minutes.Aiden Doherty’s free kick from halfway saw Anthony Doherty knock the ball down and when keeper John Mills failed to gather Michael Devlin controlled well cut across a defender and shot left footed to the net from ten yards. Devlin then fed livewire Nigel McMonagle, who ran the home defence ragged all day, but on this occasion he fired over the top  before Parsons replied for the home side with a snapshot well held in the conditions by Crossan. Inishowen replied and when a corner was returned out to Devlin his angled cross shot was gathered at the second attempt by Mills. The visitors increased their lead on 32 minutes when Devlin’s quick throw found Joe Doherty who fed McMonagle and his sharp turn  and driven cross was knocked home at the back post by Niall McDaid. Minutes later McDaid was inches away from a third when his free kick whistled past the far post before a period of sustained pressure by Inishowen ended with McMonagle wriggling past two men on the endline before crashing a shot of the  crossbar. A poor clearance by Mills in the opening minute of the second period fell to Paul Hegarty but his first time effort drifted  inches past the far post with Mills scrambling across. The home side replied with Emmet Murray’s free kick finding Keith Barber at the back post but he sidefooted across the face of goal and wide.Inishowen broke and McMonagle fed the inrushing Anthony Doherty who bore down on goal but was denied by a superb tackle by Mark O’Connor with Doherty sustaining an ankle injury in the process and replaced by Donny Bell.Inishowen spurned another great chance on 55 minutes when Hegarty’s corner was spilled by Mills allowing McDaid to turn but from point blank range he failed to connect properly and the ball was cleared off the line.As the pitch deteriorated and conditions worsened the home side got one back on the hour following a corner when the unmarked Parsons rose superbly to head home from twelve yards. The home side pushed men forward and Crossan had to be alert to save at the feet of Gilmer.Inishowen were being pinned back but the interplay of Doherty and McMonagle in attack meant they would always create chances against a three man defence. McMonagle had a twenty yard effort just wide before another shot deflected off Doherty and just over the bar. Both players combined then with McMonagle feeding Doherty and he cut across a defender but from twelve yards fired straight at Mills. The home side kept trying and went close on 85 minutes when Parsons pounced on a loose ball and fired a curling twenty yards effort which crashed off the  bar.Inishowen had the last chance when on 89 minutes another McMonagle break ended with a left footed shot which was brilliantly saved by Mills and despite five minutes of stoppage time the home side failed to force extra time. Both teams deserve credit for an excellent entertaining game in difficult conditions and all the players, management and league members wish team manager Brian Bell a speedy recovery.

Inishowen League      1-1       Mayo League

Played in beautiful conditions at Glencrow, Moville the Inishowen league had to wait until the 94th minute to equalize and earn a deserved draw which takes them to the knockout stages while Mayo are out of this years competition. Inishowen dominated the opening half and started well when Joe Doherty’s lob over the Mayo defence caused confusion but Paul Doherty’s effort was deflected wide. Joe Doherty then released Philip McGuinness on the left but with Nigel McMonagle free in the centre he over hit the pass and the chance was lost.Malachy McDermott then found McMonagle who headed the ball back to Joe Doherty but his shot with the outside of the right boot was saved by Josh Tierney who had a superb game for the Mayo side. Paul Doherty then had  a low twenty yards shot well saved by Tierney diving to his right. Before Mayo had their first opening on 28 minutes when Stevie Tierney’s free found Stephen Ryan but his header was easily gathered by Gerard Crossan. On the stroke of half time Inishowen spurned the best chance of the game after Paul Doherty’s shot on the run bounced off Tierney’s chest to McMonagle and when he tried to round Tierney the keeper fortuitously dispossessed him with a foot tackle. On the restart Inishowen missed another sitter when a superb corner from McGuinness found Steve Harkin in full flight but he somehow headed over from eight yards. Mayo replied with Tierney firing a free over the top which Crossan had covered before Inishowen replied with McMonagle seeing keeper Tierney off his line attempted a curling effort from twenty yards which sailed inches over the top.On 71 minutes Mayo substitute Ger O’Boyle curled a twenty yards free over the wall which Crossan saved left handed at the expense of a corner. From Tierney’s corner the unmarked Ryan rose well to direct twelve yard header to the top left hand corner despite Crossan getting a hand to it. Inishowen laid siege to the Mayo goal with Niall McDaid twice having headers superbly saved by Tierney before McMonagle cut in from the left and fired just over. On the stroke of full time Inishowen forced a corner and Brian Tracey’s superb delivery found McDaid at the back post and from point blank range the big Illies man somehow glanced a header wide. Most fans thought that was it but deep in injury time Inishowen forced another corner and again Tracey’s delivery found McDaid whose close range header drew a superb save from Tierney but the ball fell to substitute Donne Bell who knocked it across for captain Steve Harkin to slam the ball home and send Inishowen through. Overall a very good performance but Inishowen must become more clinical. They finished up as the only unbeaten team in the group and now face the Leinster Football League in Dublin in the last sixteen. The management committee would like to congratulate the management and the players  and to thank Moville Celtic for the use of their splendid ground and especially Mr and Mrs Joe Bredin for their hospitality.

Oscar Traynor Inter League Trophy Quarter Final

Inishowen FL              1-1       AUL  Inishowen win 4-3 on pens.

Inishown under Brian Bell and Paul Doherty qualified for the semi finals of the Oscar Traynor trophy with this exciting penalty shootout victory at Caratra Park Culdaff.Played in excellent conditions under bright sunshine the home team showed they have the talent to compete with the biggest league in the country and while the AUL had more possession the more the game went on the better Inishowen became. In a game of few chances both defences were on top for long periods but in the opening minute a loose ball broke on the edge of the area to the visitors Darren O’Brien but his effort tailed well wide. The first real opening of the game did not arrive until the 20th minute and it fell to the visitors when a superb chest lay off by Terence Corbally sent strike partner Gareth Murphy into the area but his driven effort was brilliantly saved by Gerard Crossan. A minute later a vicious inswinging free from the left from O’Brien was tipped  away at the back post by Crossan.Inishowen responded and on the half hour forced a corner with John McFeely’s delivery finding Anthony Doherty at the front post but he got too much on the header and it sailed over. The AUL took the lead on the stroke of half time and it was a soft goal to concede for the home side.Christopher Sheridan found time and space on the left and his deep cross found Joseph Flood who looped a header across goal and just inside the back post with a hint of offside. The second period followed the same pattern with first opening not coming until 70 minutes when a poor headed back pass almost let in the diminutive Murphy but Crossan advanced to spread himself well and block.Minutes later good work by Murphy saw him fire straight at Crossan from twenty yards.Inishowen replied and got back on terms when Nigel McMonagle’s deflected shot spun up in the air and when keeper Anthony McGuinness faioled to collect Anthony Doherty pounced to slot home from close range. It was a dreadful error by the keeper but from then on Inishowen grew in confidence as play swung from end to end.Twice in succession after good attacks up the left both Anthony Doherty and substitute Michael Devlin found themselves on the byline inside the area but failed to pick out unmarked colleagues in the middle and so extra time ensued.Inishowen gave as good as they got in both periods of extra time but again defences were on top and the only real chance fell to the visitors in the second period when a long kick out from McGuinness almost found substitute Anthony Kane but in a very difficult chance he failed to connect. And so the shoot out ensued and it looked bad when Inishowen missed their opening effort but successful kicks from Michael Devlin, Aiden Doherty, Dermot Diver and Anthony Doherty coupled with two brilliant saves from Crossan ensured Inishowen progress.Overall the players deserve great credit for their effort and determination with so many putting in excellent games and with a home draw to look forward too it is hoped that Inishowen can progress to what would be only their second Oscar Traynor cup final. The league management would like to congratulate all the players and team management and would also like to thank Culdaff FC for the use of their facilities which were in excellent condition.
