Moville clinch three in a row !
Moville Celtic Res 3-2 Glengad United Res
Moville Celtic Reserves clinched their third shield success in a row after a storming first half display that saw them lead by three goals to nil at the break. But all credit to Glengad who launched a stirring second half fightback and indeed had their chances to force extra time. Moville opened well and in the opening minute a deflected cross from man of the match Brendan Doherty fell kindly to Christy McGeoghaghan who advanced into the area only to see his effort crash off the base of the post. They continued to press with Kevin McDermott flicking on to Conor Lafferty who shot wide when he had two teammates in better positions. McDermott then delivered a superb cross from the right for Gearoid McQuillan who somehow lifted the ball over the bar from six yards. Glengad gained some respite when Michael Farren burst forward but his angled effort failed to trouble Sean McGuinness. Moville kept pressing and when Eunan McDaid found Lafferty he should have done better with only Kelly to beat. The pressure paid off on 21 minutes when Moville opened the scoring after a foul on Lafferty on the right hand edge of the area. Left full back Johnny Holmes curled a superb free kick to the far top corner past Martin Kelly in the Glengad goal. In a brief moment of respite for the overworked Glengad defence Gary McLaughlin volleyed just over from the edge of the area. Moville replied immediately with Lafferty forcing a brilliant tip over save from Kelly before they doubled their lead on 41 minutes. Lafferty skipped into the area and was duly upended allowing Kevin McDermott to slam the ball low to the bottom left hand corner. Minutes later it looked all over when another superb delivery from a Christy Mclaughlin free kick on the right found the unmarked Lafferty and he stooped to head low past Kelly from twelve yards.Glengad made two substitutions at the start of the second half but it was Moville who started the better with Lafferty seeing an effort from the left well held by Kelly. Glengad upped the tempo and reduced the deficit on 54 minutes when a superb run by Paul McDermott saw him upended in the area . Moville’s Darren Bredin was redcarded for a professional foul and Darren Doherty hammered the spot kick to the bottom left hand corner. Minutes later they almost added another when Daniel McDaid played a great ball into the area for McDermott to round keeper McGuinness but under pressure he failed to force the ball home and the Moville defence scrambled the ball clear. Glengad continued to press and made it three two on 79 minutes when Darren Doherty hammered home another spot kick to the same position after he had been upended in the area. They continued to press and when substitute Stephen McLaughlin crossed to the unmarked McDermott he failed to hit the target from twelve yards. Glengad suffered a blow on 85 minutes when captain Stephen McLaughlin was redcarded for a second booking. They created a final chance on the stroke of full time when McDermott fired a twenty yards free kick over the top. But Moville held on and clinched their third success in this competition in as many years.
Holders storm into the final with impressive display.
