McGonigle heads Culdaff to narrow win
Culdaff FC 4-3 Buncrana Hearts Res
In an entertaining seven goal thriller Culdaff were in front all the way but a young Buncrana side pegged them back with some excellent play.The home side got off to a great start when John McFeely’s free found Brian McGonigle who glnced a header past Conor O’Donnell from six yards.Buncrana replied on 19 minutes when the home defence failed to clear and Andrew Murphy hammered the ball low to the bottom corner from twenty yards past Martin McLaughlin.Culdaff regained the lead minutes later when Dermot Diver coolly converted a penalty after Adrian McGonigle was upended Buncrana then got back on terms when loose defensive play afforded Stephen McHugh time and space and he advanced into the area to slot the ball low past Martin McLaughlin in the home goal..Buncrana were on top at this stage with both Greg Bradley and McHugh seeing efforts well saved by McLaughlin.Culdaff got a dream start to the second half when Derek Doherty’s corner saw Diver’s header cleared off the line before Michael Coyle saw his effort cleared off the line by Kieran McDaid but finally Michael Byrne sidefooted a defender and slid the ball low to the corner from twelve yards.The home side spurned a great chance on 56 minutes when Matthew Byrne released Derek Doherty on the left and his superb cross found Conor Keddy who was denied by a brilliant save from O’Donnell.Buncrana levelled once again with a brilliant goal on 64 minutes. McHugh collected a loose ball twenty five yards out and curled a superb twenty five yards effort in off the right hand post.The home side struck for the winner on 75 minutes when Matthew Byrne’s free was laid off by Diver to Doherty who crossed to the back post for McGonigle to head home his second of the game.
McLaughlin double on his debut
Carn FC 1-2 Clonmany Shamrocks
Clonmany started well with Michael Devlin cutting in from the left and unleashing a twenty five yards effort which Padraig Doherty tipped round the post.Carn responded with Dermot Doherty, Rory Ward and Ronan Doherty combining to release Christy McLaughlin but he fired just wide from fifteen yards.Midway through the half Clonmany took the lead when Michael Devlin found John McLaughlin who fired low to the corner from twenty yards.Carn got back on terms when Brendan Tabb fed Tiernan Coyne who squared to Dermot Doherty who was upended allowing Ronan Doherty to neatly tuck the spot kick away.McLaughlin’s corner was then headed just over by Cathal O’Kane .Clonmany took the lead on the stroke of half time when Paul McLaughlin’s corner was not cleared and John McLaughlin poked home from close range.Clonmany started the second period well with Brendan Devlin’s effort from distance rebounding off the post.On the hour Ronan Doherty played a superb bpass into Ennagh Newton but he slipped the ball wide from twelve yards.Clonmany replied with Niall McDaid having a header tipped over by Doherty.On 80 minutes Coyne went close for the home side when his effort from twenty yards was blocked on the line by Liam Hirrell.
Point squander two goal lead
Carrowmena FC 2-2 QPS
The visitors started the game well pinning the home side back for long periods but failed to convert a couple of good chances that came their way.Carrowmena responded midway through the half when Paul Duffy found Matthew Henry who fired just past the post.The point took the lead on 34 minutes when Kevin Wallace and Colm MCLaughlin combined to release Aiden Lynch and he fired low past Michael Noone from fifteen yards.They increased their lead minutes later after Terry McColgan flicked on a free for Lynch to stab home his second.Carrowmena reduced the deficit in the opening minute when Duffy and James Henry combined well to set up Matthew Henry and he drilled the ball low past David McGeady from twelve yards.They got back on terms on 72 minutes when Conoe Radcliffe crossed to Brian Kone who laid the ball off to Johnathan McLaughlin who fired low to the net from the edge of the area.Things boiled over then with Michael Farren and Aiden Lynch both getting red carded to reduce the visitors to nine men.They almost paid the price in the closing stages when McLaughlin played a ball over the top for Patrick McClenaghan whose looping header was brilliantly tipped round the post by McGeady.
Glengad come from behind to win
Glengad United 2-1 Moville Celtic
The visitors started well and took the lead on 21 minutes when Kevin McDermott beat a defender and crossed for Ritchie McElhinney who slotted low past Michael McLaughlin from fourteen yards.Glengad got back on terms on 35 minutes when Jason McLaughlin’s deep free found Anthony Toland at the back post and his driven cross was touched home by John G McLaughlin.On 53 minutes Toland disposed a Moville player and fed Alan Orr who crossed for Toland to fire high past Maurice McGeady from the edge of the area.Glengad continued to press with Christy McLaughlin, Orr and Stephen McLaughlin all having efforts off the woodwork.Moville rallied in the closing stages with Mark Henry’s twenty five yards effort deflected by the foot of McLaughlin inches past the post.
Greencastle cause shock of the weekend
Aileach FC 0-3 Greencastle FC
Aileach started well but on 8 minutes Stephen Doherty fired over the top in a game reversed to Greencastle.Aileach continued to press and when Damien Barr sent Anthony Doherty clean through he shot straight at the keeper.On 15 minutes Greencastle caught the visitors out and took the lead with a quick free finding John Casey who fired over keeper Kieran Gallagher from sixteen yards.Aileach replied with Anthony Doherty slicing an effort wide when well placed.Greencastle replied before the break but Paddy Keys fired a shot straight at Gallagher from the edge of the area.Aileach pressure on the restart saw Declan O’Donnell just fail to convert a Kieran Craig cross.Greencastle replied on the hour when Ryan McDermott cut in from the left beat two defenders and shot low to the corner from sixteen yards.With Aileach pushing they were caught on the break with Casey racing clear to square to Tony Boyce to record the first shock result of the season.
Kearney fires colts to victory
Gleneely Colts 3-2 Dunree United
The home side took the lead on 5 minutes when Declan Kearney released TJ McKinley to fire to the top corner from twenty yards past Johnathan Noone.Dunree replied with Brendan McDaid hitting the post from point blank range.They levelled on the stroke of half time when Ryan Bradley tapped home from close range.On 62 minutes Ronan Kearney released Cory O’Brien who was upended and Declan Kearney converted low past Noone.A minute later the Kearneys combined for Ronan to slot low past Noone from fifteen yards.Dunree reduced the deficit Jason McLaughlin’s looping effort from thirty yards deceived Daniel McCauley in the home goal.They almost salvaged a point late on but Bradley saw two efforts rebound off the post.
Rasheney pay the penalty
Rasheney FC 0-5 Redcastle United
This game was the first to be played under floodlights at Rasheney but Redcastle showed no mercy and a missed penalty at one nil proved costly.Early chances fell to Andy Porter and Brian Tracey for the visitors but both failed to hit the target.Midway through the half Eamon Donnelly went close with a free kick from the edge of the area before Porter’s corner was headed wide by Raymond Campbell as Redcastle with the wind dominated.On 40 minutes Rasheney replied with Rocky Ivers driven cross was well gathered at the near post by Gerard Crossan.Redcastle broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time when Tracey set up Porter who despatched a crisp low drive from twenty five yards to the bottom corner.The home side started the second period well with John Grant and Ivers combining to find the unmarked Darren Grant but from twelve yards he fired just wide when he should have scored.On 62 minutes Shane Collin was impeded in the area but Grant blazed over from the spot.Redcastle made them pay when Donnelly. Porter and Tracey combining before Donnelly fired wide.They doubled their lead when Tracey’s header deflected off a defender past his own keeper.They quickly added another when Ryan McMonagle’s cross was parried by Fergal Doherty to Cathal Faulkner who tapped in.Daniel Harkin then had a spectacular lob tipped over by Doherty before they added number four on 81 minutes when Tracey drifted past two defenders before cutting in and firing low to the corner from fifteen yards.They completed the scoring when McMonagle hooked the ball home from close range.
Cockhill squeeze past Rovers
Sea Rovers 0-1 Cockhill Celtic Youth
Rovers started well with Seamus Doherty and Gary Farren having efforts well saved by Leo McColgan.The best chance of the half fell to Eamon Porter but his shot was well saved by Declan Lafferty on the half hour.Just after the break Seamus Gill raced clear of the home defence but Lafferty spread himself well to make a blocking save.Cockhill took the lead on 52 minutes when Kieran McLaughlin’s deflected effort from thirty yards deceived Lafferty in the home goal.Rovers responded with Eddie Kelly’s free well saved by Leo McColgan before Conor Farren’s shot on the turn drifted just past the post.
