Substitute Davenport ends Redcastle cup hoodoo

Redcastle United           2-1    Clonmany Shamrocks

A goal three minutes from the end of a very entertaining final by substitute Stephen Davenport secured Redcastle their first cup victory after ten heartbreaking nights. Played in wet and windy conditions both teams have to be complimented as they played some excellent passages of football. Clonmany had the opening chance on 8minutes when Michael Grant fed  Jason Devlin who burst into the area but his effort was blocked by Gerard Crossan. Redcastle replied with Eamon Donnelly seeing his free from distance skidding past Peter Devlin’s right hand post before Eddie McIntyre found space on the right and drilled a shot across goal and wide. Clonmany took the lead on 22 minutes when a defensive error allowed Paddy Doherty to turn and shoot low to the corner from fourteen yards. Redcastle replied immediately and got back on terms after Eamon Donnelly collected a pass on the edge of the area and neatly shifted the ball from right to left before drilling low past Devlin. On  41 minutes Jason Devlin collected a pass from Grant and cut in from the right to unleash a powerful shot which Crossan tipped over. At the other end after a neat interchange of passes by Andy Porter, Brian Tracey and McIntyre saw Daniel Harkin collect the ball on the left and he was unlucky to see his cross shot beat Devlin but crash back off the post.On the stroke of half time a Liam Davenport free found Porter but he was reaching for it and failed to direct his header on target. Clonmany began the second period in the ascendancy and when Marty Doherty’s overhead kick found Jason Devlin his shot was saved at full stretch by Crossan. The same players combined just before the hour mark but Devlin’s weak shot was easily gathered by Crossan. On 67 minutes Redcastle replied with Ryan McMonagle laying the ball into the path of McIntyre whose driven cross was scrambled clear by the Clonmany defence.Substitute Charlie McCormick then raced into the area and rounded keeper Devlin but his cross found no takers. With extra time looming Redcastle struck for the winner on 87 minutes and it was two substitutes who conjured up the winning goal when McCormick’s right wing corner was glanced to the net by the inrushing Stephen Davenport from the edge of the six yards area to send the Redcastle players, fans and management into raptures. Clonmany tried to respond but the Redcastle defence with Martin Farren and man of the match Donnelly superb stood firm.

All associated with Inishowen football will wish Clonmany’s Michael Grant a speedy recovery from his knock which necessitated a trip to hospital.

Aiden Doherty’s penalty was brialliantly saved by Conor O’Donnell only for the ball to be half cleared and when it was returned into the box P.J. Mc Laughlin was on hand to finish. Illies were on top at this stage and O’Donnell had to be alert to save twice from Paddy Doherty – first from close in and then from a free kick outside the area. After the break, Buncrana took control and on 55 minutes great work on the right by Mc Daid saw him beat two defenders to lay it on a plate for Alan Fletcher to tap home. On 70 minutes Illies were caught out on the break by quick thinking from James O’Donnell who released Stephen Mc Hugh who chipped the keeper from 30 yards. Illies rallied but found the home defence and keeper O’Donnell in good form and there was to be no further scoring.

This was a significant result for Greencastle by virtue of which they qualified for the semi finals of the League Cup. They opened well and when Paddy Keys released Sean Mc Quillan down the left, Tom Casey drove the latter’s cross just wide of the post. Mc Quillan had to retire due to a head injury shortly afterwards. Mid way through the half, Gleneely’s Barry Diver won possession, played the ball wide to Ronan Kearney who crossed to Mc Elhinney at the back post but his shot was well saved by Philip Mc Clenaghan in the home nets. Ruairi Kelly then played in Declan Kearney whose 20 yard effort was wide of the left hand post. On 40 minutes Liam Kelly started the move of the match involving Jack Keys and Michael Barr and resulted in Stephen Bonner’s attempted lob just clearing the bar. On the stroke of half time Greencastle’s Ryan Mc Clenaghan beat two defenders but his attempt on goal, although deflected, seemed to be heading for the top corner until Mc Cauley made an outstanding save. In the second half, chances to Gleneely’s Ronan Kearney and Jason Mc Elhinney  were dealt with by the home keeper while at the other end Mc Clenaghan and Casey were denied by Mc Cauley. On 70 minutes the deadlock was broken when Paddy Keys picked out Mc Clenaghan in midfield. He ran at the Gleneely defence and played in Casey whose first time effort was pushed away by Mc Cauley to the feet of Bonner who finished coolly from 10 yards. Despite the setback, Gleneely continued to play measured football with the Kearney brothers and Diver constantly probing for a way through but finding Charlie Gill and Michael Brown standing firm in defence. Greencastle sub Ian Cavanagh was then denied by a brilliant Mc Cauley save before, at the other end, T.J. Mc Kinley set up Declan Kearney whose effort from the edge of the area scraped the post. The home side’s passage into the semis was secured when Jack Keys rose highest to head home from a corner late on.
